Another one I love is the guy practicing long range lags on a crowded putting green. I understand you want to work on this but C'MON Man!

Finally, at my club we have mats at the back and they use them a couple times a week to give the turf a break. Some guys want to hit driver and can't put a tee in the mat so they step out in front. Its one thing if there is no one there or you go down to the end, but when you are right in front of me I can't focus because I am afraid I am going to shank one up your @ss.

I say shank away, just make sure you yell "fore" afterward

The dude that annoys me is the one who shows up to the driving range (a 3rd class range at that) decked out in all of his finest golf gear, hat, sunglasses, matching belt etc... and proceeds to treat the outing as if he were walking 18 holes at pebble beach in a pro-am. Every 10 swings or so... pauses, sits down, nibbles on a little snack, sips some Gatorade, then repeats. Granted, he's not actually doing anything wrong, per se', but it just rubs me as being incredibly "douchey".

Then there's the guy who shows up and practices in bare feet... BARE FEET... in 45 degree weather!!!

I totally agree.  This is the most annoying thing I encounter.  It annoys me even if it is crowded.

Don't see why something that doesn't affect or impinge on you is douchy.  I'll often stop during a practice session and sit and think about what I have been doing.  Hitting shot after shot is not a good simulation of what you do on the course, where hitting 40-50 full shots takes place over 3-1/2 to 5 hours.

Sure the problem is not jealosy of his gear?

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Thanks for shining light on my motives, you have profound insight. Next time I intend on issuing my personal opinion on a thread that asks for everyone's personal opinion, I'll make sure to consult with you first. Matter of fact, lets practice this right now...

I consider your response rather "douchey"... It wreaks of someone who has been self appointed as thread police. Now, do you consider this a valid personal opinion?

Also, when my home course is busy, so is the practice putting green.  But you still get those who think that's the best time to have a putting contest, so they try to play all of the holes on the green in some sort of sequence, even when there is already one or two guys using each hole.  It really ticks me off when I'm getting ready to make my stroke and this ball comes trundling in from 50 feet away, followed in 5 seconds by a second one.  This is a fun exercise when the green is empty or nearly so and you can putt to vacant holes, but not when you have a dozen players warming up and trying to get a feel for the greens before they tee off.  C'mon guys, use your heads!

You're entitled to your opinion, but I'd suggest you try practicing like that a little minus being decked out in the finest gear.  I've found my range sessions are more productive if I practice like I play.  After warming up I will approach each shot like I would on a course rather than mindlessly hitting balls one right after the other.  I change clubs, pause in between shots and line up to a target and play each ball as I would on my home course.

That's me on occasion...lol sometimes a little Dave Matthews or Tom Petty helps me find the zone. I've even played a few practice rounds with them in. I'm fully aware of how ridiculous it looks though. And as for the guy who practices like it's a pro-am...beating balls for an hour is just going to wear you down. I usually play my home course or somewhere like Augusta in my head on the range. Makes it more fun and keeps me from getting in a rut with one club. Just not in my best gear...

I'm not going left or right of those trees, ok? I'm going over those trees...with a little draw.

This golfer doesn't annoy as much as he makes me giggle out loud at him on the practice green, guy with ear buds in listening to music while putting on the practice green.

well thank you for entitling me to my own opinion, that's more credit than what I got from the turtlemeister. but fwiw, you're making the same mistake he did and reading too much into my post. I never complained about the guy sitting and thinking about his game every few shots. unlike turtleneck, I don't have the ability to read people's minds/motives with infallible certainty, so I wouldn't venture to comment on what I thought the dude was thinking about... who knows, he may not have been thinking about golf at all, he could have been sitting there thinking about the square root of pi for all I know. What I DID complain about was how douchey I thought it was that this dude would sit down every 10 shots or so and re-fuel on his well-planned out snacks: some trail mix here, a granola bar there... Gatorade, etc. It was the REFUELING that I thought was douchey, cuz who needs to refuel over a bucket of 80 or so range balls... the whole scene was just a little too drummed up for me. The 2nd mistake you make alongside my dear friend Master Splinter is assuming I just whack away at my balls with no direction or knowledge of sound practice fundamentals. while I'm often forced to hurry things along due to hitting the range during my lunch break, I by no means just "mindlessly hit balls" - as you say - but rather i attempt to maximize the 50 or so minutes I have with a strategy of 2 or 3 elements to zero in on. But who am I kidding... it makes no sense going into this much detail explaining myself. If you're half as gifted as Turtleback is, you already knew all this. -- end sarcasm seriously tho, I appreciate u offering advice, cuz you're right, but you're basically preaching to the choir.

I think someone needs to chill out.  You start out by calling a guy a douche who obviously practices with a plan (and it doesn't mean a hoot that you don't agree with his plan), then you take offense when it's suggested that your reaction is a bit over the top.  For Pete's sake, it's the practice range.  Get over it.

What's wrong with that? I do that too. Main reason is it keeps me there longer. So as long as the guy isn't singing aloud to his tunes, why would you care?

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
