Feeling a bit of burnout lately.  All these 5:30am rounds are taking a toll.  Really struggled out there this week and only shot in the 30's once.  Still love playing and practicing every day that I can, I just am a bit run down and it is hard to focus out there.  I have a vacation coming up in August which should be a nice break.  I need a week off, even from golf.

If I cannot nestle some eggs in the nest with this I should probably find a new hobby. ;)

That's a nice putter. I have the earlier model of that putter from 2010. The Odyssey White Hot #7. I love it. My putting lately is really good. Also, it looks like you're making some good progress on your swing. I wish my local course opened at 5:30am. I'd be there.

Yeah my lag putts and short putts have been much better since switching.  I really am not huge on the look of the putter, but of all the putters I have been testing it seemed to perform the best for me.  I should be doing a Edel fitting later this year and so we will see if one of those can knock the #7 out of the bag.

Question time.  I hit a draw for most irons.  Wedges more straight than anything else. But long irons through 9 iron, it is pretty much a draw.  Driver is a tight fade.  Can't draw it without hitting low spinning hooks so that was easy to decide on the fade.  The three wood is the one that is giving me troubles right now.  I really have no idea what kind of ball flight I am going to get off the tee. It is about 50/50 as to hitting the shot that I try to or getting some kind of surprise gift.  Path is fairly consistent, but have some pretty bad key 5 issues off of the tee especially.  I have no clue if it will fade or draw, or push or pull.  I like drawing it better but if I try to draw the ball I often hit a high pull hook or hang it out to the right.  If try to fade it I often miss with a double cross or a push fade.  I don't know if some tape out on the toe would help?  I really just need to learn how to hit it and decide what shot I want to play.  What shot shape should I settle on and might anyone have any tips for hitting a fairway wood off the tee?

I noticed that when the shaft is parallel the club face is a little closed. It might also be the camera angle.

My coach has more or less corrected my issue, which was over the top. This led me to pull the ball to the right (I am a lefty). Now I hit straighter.

Maybe a path issue as well then?

Your swing looks extremely good, and this is the only thing I noticed because my coach is working on these other issues with me. (You are, by definition, the expert here.)

So with 3 wood, start lines are inconsistent?  Where is the contact on the face?

Yes start lines. Path is usually out to the right, so it is either the shot I want to hit, a pull hook, or a straight push or push fade. Face contact is pretty centered for my skill level anyway. Not like a scratch guy would be though, but in the misses I usually feel center contact. I do have an occasional push fade out on the toe.

Interesting ... cuz when I get it out on the toe (same is true for 3 wood and driver) I end up with some pretty nasty hooks.

By the way, I have similar problems with my 3 wood too ... never know where its going. ;)

Yeah with my driver at least I know what kind of shot shape I will get most of the time now. I have been thinking about trying a deeper faced 3w out as well because of how I hit it higher on the face like the picture shows. I have no idea why I hit it on the toe and get a push fade. Just strange. I don't know about you but to me I almost feel like the club is too light and harder to control. Even more so than my driver.

I have been looking at that.  It does look like the face is deeper.  I just wonder if I cannot hit a 15 degree 3W can I hit a 12.5 one?  Or is it that easy to hit? It does look like it is a couple extra swing weights more than my i20 with a nicely weighted shaft.

This means nothing, so take it with a grain 1/2 a grain of salt, but when I was at Callaway testing out their xhot fairway woods I was loving the 15* 3 wood, but couldn't do anything with the 13* xhot pro.  Don't think I was even getting it up in the air.  Again, it means nothing, but just thought I'd share. :)

I feel like my 3 wood problem is a lame, mental one.  I look at the club behind the ball and I'm like "it's so small, I think I'm gonna whiff" and then somehow just take these gawdaful swings with it sometimes.  When I do swing it well, however, it is a beautiful thing.  To the point that if I could trust it, I'd almost never bother with the driver.  At the range, my nice off-the-deck 3 wood shots aren't more than 15-20 yards shorter than my nice teed up driver shots.  They are just much fewer and further between. ;)  (Unfortunately, I don't get to practice with my 3 wood much off the tee at the range because they are mats and the rubber tees are all way too tall for a 3 wood.  Now that I think about it, I have a couple tees at home ... I really should cut one short and bring it with me. ;))

Yeah 99 percent of it is mental for me as well.  I think 3w issues are probably pretty common, when we spend the majority of the time working on our irons and hitting a few drivers at the range here and there. All that being said if there is something out there that will make me feel more confident I am down with that.  One of the things I was thinking about was the 3 deep 14.5, but I would want to test it out first.  Since switching to the shallow face style three woods I have had some problems off the tee and obviously hit it too high on the face.  Who knows, maybe I just need to learn how to play some golf.
