Hi all, I'm struggling with a problem in my swing, on my iron shots I get very steep and basically try to drill the ball into the ground, my divots are deep and very long, my shots come out like punch shots. I've been trying to get more shallow angle of attack. How can I fix this?

Two ways that I can think of:

1) Flatter shoulder turn should shallow the swing out a bit (probably not recomended for the shorter clubs)

2) More secondary axis tilt.  Keep your head steady and push the hips forward (toward the target)

Can you explain 2 a little more Thanks!

From personal experience, if my head moved forward (toward the target, not toes) on the downswing, my swing would get really steep as well.  This did not work to bad for my wedges and short irons, in fact, I hit them a fairly decent distance.  It was terrible for my long irons though.  I was inconsistent with them and if I came in a touch behind the ball, with that steep of a swing, I really took a lot of sod.

Try to find some "head steady" drills.

Not sure if this explained much more.

it's all in your take away.  you probably bring the club up too fast.  work on keeping the takeaway low to the ground.  almost drag the head through the grass a couple inches on your takeaway.  see if that helps.

2) On the downswing, shove your front leg so it goes beyond your front ankle while stepping down on your front foot (pressing it into the ground); and push or slide the hips before turning them, and then tuck your butt in

If you flatten your shoulder plane, you could end up topping everything, too. Try the above first before flattening.

I actually play hockey haha I just did a swing analysis and this is how it looks My takeaway is pretty low good I'm a little steep at the top probly 3-5 inches off my swing plane Impact position is inbetween my at the top line and my starting line Head movement-big problem I noticed about a 4 inch drop from start to impact Could the head bob be a good cause of low shots and big divots?

Try this -
Put your change in your left pocket. Go on, do it. Now, tie your left shoe in a double knot.
Right now, do it! Turn the hat backwards. Turn your hat around. Do it, Keller.
Take this tee and stick it behind your left ear.
Do it now or I'm going to quit. I swear to God I'll quit. Good. Take this ball and hit it up the fairway.

I wouldn't put that tee behind your left ear unless you're looking to hit some hooks, put it in your right hip pocket, that will help to start the ball to the right.

What the poster said about keeping it low on the takeaway is really the best way.

Watch when tiger releases the ball, look at how the club swings around at about knee height and comes in really shallow, instead of at an almost 45* angle like a plane crashing into the ground. Think airplane landing rather than airplane crashing.

practice hitting off your driveway... won't be digging divots for too long after that... otherwise, have you actually been fitted for your irons? One overlooked and simple thing is, they may be too long for you. just a thought... And yes, your 'hockey' swing may be part of the problem. we all know that a slap shot is fastest when the player strikes the ice first (usually 6-12 inches behind the puck) and uses the flex of the stick to catapult the puck. (we DID all know that, didn't we?). You might need to really try and separate the hockey brain from the golf brain to bring about the flight change you're looking for.

No I have not been fitted for irons, I'm giving it thought. The hockey terms are correct, I do not hit behind the ball though, I think the low shot could be from ducking my head like in a hockey shot.

i hit down on the ball at contact, or at least i try to.  i play the ball a little right of middle to make sure i hit the ball first.  if you notice, a lot of tour players take big divots.  the divot size is not the problem.  the problem would be if you are hitting the ground before the ball.
