I think I figured out what the major (among others) leak in my game is. Long putts. My overall putting is 2.03/hole, which is bad, but my putts/GIR is 2.42! That seems really bad but I don't have anything to base it against. What is your putts/GIR and do you consider it good or bad?

Home Course:
Town of Colonie (69.7-70.1, 119-125)

Here's an old thread ( How would you rate yourself? ) that gives some helpful stats. That said, putts per GIR isn't listed but could be figured. I know my putts per GIR is higher that my putts per round but that is simply that my chipping or up and down shots are often better than my GIR shots.

1.89. Last round, it was a measly 2.10 (a single three-putt and a whole lot of two-putts from long range).

We would make a good scramble team. My putts per round average this year is 1.94, my puts per GIR is 2.18. But my handicap is higher than yours. My putts per round average has been a little lower in the past, but I haven't chipped in but maybe 3 times all summer. At one time I averaged a a chip in about every other round. O putt holes lower the average fast. Thats why putts per GIR is the more important # in my opinion.

7 GIR on a bad day and you are an 18.5 index? Hell, I'm a 4 and I have days where I only get 4-5 and my good ones are 11-13.

I'm surprised at some that are averaging over 2 putts/green missed...need to work on the chipping badly and some putting. Either you are not chipping anywhere near the hole or 3 putting from close range too much.

I'm probably right around 2/GIR based on a couple 3 putts and a few 1 putts lately.

I'm getting better at putting, but chipping is still killing me. I'm trying to chip close enough to one putt (obviously) or better yet chip in (which has only happened three times this whole year), but I'm just not getting there. My putting's probably lower in the past week than it was say, a month ago, because I've pretty much gotten rid of four putting and most three putting, as well.

past 5 rounds was actually pretty good because i have only averaged a little over 5 greens in reg per round and its made my putts per GIR 1.7ish. Now that number is obscured because i think my 12 month avg is 2.13 or something like that with an avg of 7.9 GIR per round, every thing changes when you have an index and use stats

Lamebums, It took me years to listen to someone about putting and chipping because even though we all have trouble we all think we can make every putt we step up to. The number one problem with putting is speed control. Amateur's don't have it, i don't have it. Our club professional who's my "swing instructor" per say always told me if your off the green and you have a very unlikely chip in imagine the hole being a tire, try to chip to within two feet of the tire. On long putts try to putt within the tire leaving yourself no more that a couple feet. When you can grasp that you start seeing a circle around the pin and you always have 5 foot radius to chip to and a 2 foot radius to putt to on those long putts.

Wow, 7 GIR on a BAD day? That's pretty good. How are you still a 19 handicap with stats like that? Your putting must be a lot worse than 1.9 per hole.

Since I've started keeping track (5 rounds), I'm 2.07 PPG and 1.69 PPM, with 36% GIR, so 1.83 PPH. I agree, this is THE leak for any mid-handicapper, IMO. I need to get back in the mindset of, a missed green and a two-putt is nearly as bad as a three-putt, that I have to get my short game shots in position to 1-putt.

To give you an idea, tour players are at 1.73-1.90 PPG and 1.56-1.72 PPH, and 55-71% GIR. If you use midpoints of (round numbers) 1.80 PPG and 1.65 PPR, and a midpoint of 67% GIR, that implies their PPM is about 1.35! .

I would say reasonable targets are 2.00 PPG and 1.50 PPM. Basically, when you hit a green, you're solid for the two-putt par; when you miss the green, you one-putt at least as often than you two-putt. If you further assume that when you miss the green, you do so by only one shot, those stats would say you play to a 9-handicap.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

Either that, or when he misses a green, it's because he's yanked three shots OB and his 1.9 putts are for triples.

I only keep stats for the last 20 rounds am averaging 1.88 putts per GIR right now. I would love to get it down to about 1.80 but I dont see that happening anytime soon. My average total putts per round right now is sitting at 32 (31.95)
