Just last week, I played in a mini-tour event and the guy I played with did not play well at all. My caddy, in trying to offer a little consoling, said, "mama said there would be days like this". Without missing a beat, the guy said, "I wish my mama was here, I need a hug".

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

One I use once in while while ribbing buddies, "it's not straight, but at least it's short, or it's short, but at least it's crooked".

You shut your mouth! If Arnie says he put overspin on the drive at Cherry Hills, then that exactly how it went down!

Ones I hate: "Don't try to kill the ball" Well, you can not kill it if you want, but that's why I'm hitting it 280 and you're hitting it 180, lol. 4
"It's in the hole!" No explanation necessary.
I don't have a ton that I hate, but I have a few that I like: "Hitting it flush" Don't now why, but I love that word, flush. Lol.
"Good ball!"
"Bump N' Run"
"Phil Flop", lol love that
That's about it really.

When I leave a putt short, and someone says "you gotta hit it..."

I did hit it, evidenced by the fact that the ball moved.

I just didn't hit it hard enough.

But next time I will be sure to swing it harder.

That's an important life lesson, one I will apply when I swing my XG Teron into his cash and prizes.

I'm a fan of the whole "that'll play!" after a tee shot is topped like 40 yards.

Every single shot someone hits on our high school team is now followed by the words "ball."

Instead of "good ball", it was shortened to just "ball."

I hate it.

I also hate "Go in!" when it's pretty apparent that it's either left short, or its curving too much.

I got randomly paired with this guy a few weeks ago. After every shot (full, chip, putt, whatever), he had to comment. If a putt missed just short and left, then he'd say, "wow...should've hit that a bit harder and to the right". If you hit it onto the back of the green and the pin was in front... "should've hit it softer or one less club, that pin was in the front".

This guy was an idiot and I beat him by at least 15 strokes! It was really hard to ignore... but, I just looked at it as a learning tool and laughed it off.

The Good:

A friend of mine came up with "legit sticks" for a good shot. At first I hated it, but it's grown on me a lot.

I really enjoy overusing Gary Koch's infamous "better than most" on a chip or long putt that looks like it has a chance to drop.

I also like phrases with "sauce" in them -- "weak sauce" for something that comes up short, "garb sauce" for a terrible shot.

The old saws about a massive pull (i.e., a "dead yank") being a "Thurman Munson" and a poor shot that has a fortunate result (i.e., one that "got away with murder") being an "O.J. Simpson" are also pretty good.

Finally, my friends and I have named a short putt that barely gets to the hole a "Vijay." (Remember his three-foot birdie putt on 18 during the third round of this year's PGA Championship?)

The Bad:

In my first ever post on this forum (in this thread no less ... glad to see it resuscitated after its two-year coma), I complained about "not a lot of green to work with." Well, it still sucks.

I have a good buddy that I play with all the time. On this one hole, he is ALWAYS right of the fairway in nearly the same spot every time. He made the comment once that he had a mailbox put in at that spot. Now every time we play, I remind him to check his mail. Also, sometimes when either of us has a bad day putting, we call it a Ray Charles day on the greens.

Yup, "better than most" is annoying as hell ... that's why I love using it to irritate friends. So I guess I like the line not for itself but for its effect.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
