Hamilton was recently announced in the Queen's New Year's list which means he has the potential to become the 1st active F1 driver to be knighted.

Lewis Hamilton is still not signed for 2021.

Quote

Hamilton has rejected an offer which could have seen him make 40 million euros a year with a 10 per cent bonus for winning the world championship. Reportedly, Hamilton has been looking at a long term 4-year contract and also is looking for more money.

That is quite interesting re Hamilton and I am surprised.   For me, a shot at an 8th title would outweigh the desire for a long term contract, especially with 40 million Euros guaranteed.  Even without a contract he'll be able to stay in F1 for 4 more years anyway.  And I don't know if he is worth more money than that.  Merc can win the title without him.  On paper, the rule changes for next year don't look like they will have a significant impact on Mercedes performance.  Bottas took second in the championship and George Russell showed what he can do behind the wheel of a Merc.

I wonder what Mercedes will do?   I would love to see Hamilton replaced (or Bottas by someone else who can challenge Lewis, ie George Russell).  I see him as the GOAT but we already know the outcome of him driving a Mercedes with Bottas as his teammate.  Time to switch things up.

I think it’s all posturing by both sides right now. Hamilton is 36. Maybe he wants a piece of the company (or a bigger piece). I expect he’ll sign by the end of January or so.

But I don’t know, I’m just saying what I’ve read from other credible folks. Maybe they’ll settle on three years or something.

I agree it’s 90% the car and only about 10% the driver, which is really frustrating to me.

I think you are underestimating the drivers a bit. Yes it helps he has the best car but there are plenty of drivers that wouldnt have the success he does in that Merc. In the end they will pay him closer to his terms than theirs i believe. Looking forward to an exciting season.

I didn’t think I am. George went from zero points in his entire career to really having should have won the one race he did in a Merc. With only a few days to get used to it, the wrong sized cabin, a foreign wheel… etc.

I’ve asked others and they’ve said similar things. 80-95% is the car.

That’s part of what stinks about F1.

I signed up for F1TV this year. F1TV25 saves you 25%. $60 for the year.

They still billed me the $80 so I've filed a support request.

Yeah, no. I'm going to quote a friend I showed your post to, and he said "The idea that it would’ve bounced off the guardrail w/o the halo is preposterous."

The Halo got into the guard rail after the monocoque pierced it. It wasn't the Halo piercing it, it was the part where his legs are.

The shell, the monocoque with the driver's legs and stuff, took a bunch of the impact.

The 2020 season of F1: Drive to Survive is out on Netflix. Would have finished binge watching it already if I wasn't out of town with only limited dongle access to the internet which I need for work. In some ways I find this more interesting than the actual races, which sometimes get boring

This season wasn’t as good. They covered few races. It wasn’t as chronological.

Netflix's cameras had an uninterrupted view of the paddock this year—which makes its framing weirder than ever.

Agreed, for the most part.

I agree. This season felt choppy, at best. Verstappen, the number 2 driver in F1, had about 30 seconds of total air time the entire season. They waited until the last 5 minutes of the series to let Hamilton speak on the big social justice issues going on.

The "Man on Fire" episode was pretty good, but even then they kept jumping from the crash to a different story in the same episode. Very bizarre.

    • True, true. I should do that. He really did go off during that run, I remember now. Appreciate the context.
    • I am pretty sure it is this. Word probably got around. The reports coming out now is that he bombed some interviews, and when pressed about it during the interview just basically had a horrible response. His attitude is crap. There are stories about him throwing his players under the bus at Colorado. I get it, he's not playing behind the best O-Line or have the best weapons (outside of Travis Hunter). That is bad leadership, bad attitude.  Also, it could be his dad as well. Who would want Prime Time chattering.  Go watch the playoff run. Four top 10 teams. He was elite. The Penn State game happened with our starting left guard shifting to left tackle and going up against the 3rd pick in the NFL draft. He had two big mistakes early. The pick, which looked to be a defensive play call to trap that RPO quick out, and then the fumble off his knee. He won the game besides that.
    • Day 2: Speed training session
    • Yea I admit too I had more of a 2nd round evaluation on him, where I wrote in my notes "Maybe Geno Smith" after watching a couple games. Too many screens, too many sacks, awkward throwing motion at times, low velocity at times. Too low. At other times though I thought he made some nice throws, hence why I thought he should've probably gone around round two. So to me the free fall is surprising to an extent, but of course, it all makes sense now that he's still sitting there. He probably bombed his interviews too, and I know almost nothing of his personality. I love sports betting, hence why I love following this stuff, but there's only so much I can know from the outside looking in. But yea, my 2nd round guess was smart to an extent, but also bad now that he's still on the board and it's pick 4.17 at the moment. I see. Thanks for the take, I know you watch every game of theirs.  I just watched some of the Penn State game and can see both the upside and why he's still available. But I can get on board as well that Howard has more upside than Sanders too. Tougher competition, showed some growth from K-State to Ohio State.  I guess the question marks with Howard are processing and accuracy. Yea especially for us as fans. We don't get to interview these guys or talk to their college coaches to get a better idea of what they'll be like to work with everyday. We don't know who will end up being more durable and whose body will just naturally break down over the next few years. Some guys are great talents who go to terrible situations too, who are poor system fits in failed regimes. Other guys hit the jackpot with the perfect role on a great team in a weak division. There are so many variables.
