That's a stupid comment, Shorty. Putting up could be what got someone sued. Keeping what you heard to yourself because it's not golf related, but mentioning that you heard "something," is not an offense.

But if it's not actually going to be discussed, then why bring it up in the first place?  If you were going to keep it to yourself, then that's what I think you should have done.  All that this vague innuendo does is fuel the rumor mill, and I sort of thought we mostly tried to keep things more factual around here.

That's what I was gonna say. Keeping it to yourself and saying "I heard some rumors about Phil..." aren't quite the same.

Ah, yes, the rumors...

Rumors are what less-skilled sportswriters deal with on slow news days. Tidbits to keep the fans stirred up. (For you etymology buffs, the word fan is a short form of fanatic .)

Anyone who is a celebrity becomes the topic of rumors. Everyday people love to knock down the prominent and successful. This psychological phenomenon even has its own name: schadenfreude - taking joy in the misfortunes of others.

http://www.theawl.com/2011/10/a-joyful-malicious-history-of-schadenfreude

schadenfreude + basking in moral superiority also fuel the reality TV shows. Viewers can take pride in the fact they're not as screwed up as the cast members of Jersey Shores .

Or, we can put this nonsense aside for awhile and go play golf...

Because it was relevant to the discussion. People mentioned part of his legacy was that "by all accounts" he was a good man, so any accounts against that are relevant.

Regardless of whether that person knows specifics, it's still relevant that he has heard negative accounts.

Rick, you seem to be confusing the comments I made earlier in the thread with the far more "I know a secret" type stuff posted above. I was simply responding to Shorty's comment in response to that recent comment (again, not by me) about how saying "I heard a rumor, but I'm not sharing it" is not something for which you can sue, but sharing the rumors could be.

I posted earlier to refute the "by all accounts" comment by another poster. It's inaccurate. The actual content of the things I've heard from trustworthy people is not relevant, just as Tiger's crap is not relevant (to me). Phil is a great golfer, and I couldn't care less about what they do off the golf course.

Edit: took me too long to post. This basically says it:

Aaaaand there you have it. Same with any kind of celebrity...I'm not trying to be their friend, so I don't care if they're an a-hole or not.

I think Phil is a great guy and loves his family but that doesn't mean he isn't capable of being tempted or straying when the opportunity presents itself.

He's a popular sports figure, wealthy and spent / spends a lot of time on the road away from family.  Given his fame, he probably has a number of female groupies who have propositioned him while at a tournament to get at his money or test his loyalty to his wife.

I don't care if he cheated on his wife any more than I care that Tiger did.  I like him, Tiger and many other golfers for what they do on the golf course not in their time away from the course.

Which in today's TMZ society is good enough to indict in the court of public opinion, I suppose.

Isn't this thread about the Open win and Phil's GOLFING legacy?

If you google, you will find rumors as to Phil, Amy, etc. and none have been proven. Unlike Tiger, no women have stepped into the public. Personally, I don't care. I mean, it's hell taking care of my life. I don't have the time to worry about Phil and Amy.

Phil admits to having gambled, which is legal in Vegas. He does not smoke or drink, so gambling was his way of dealing with issues. But he says that he doesn't gamble any longer, except probably on the 18th hole of US Opens....

As to his golf legacy, he is still writing it. The Open Win regenerates the public's interest. Heck, it regenerated Bones and Phil. Hell, it emptied my pocketbook. 3Deep, Here I come! Fore nothing ... it's straight and long, C'mon Babeeeeeeee.
