The best answer I have heard to this question came from a gay, African American. He claimed to have taken up the sport because... in his words,

"Its the only place where I can wear my most ridiculous combination of colors and styles and no one bats an eyelid. I already knew most of the male population had a hidden desire to dress more like me but at the time I didn't realise that these dreams are a basic reality for golfers. I didn't realise that most golfers score between 4 and 5 on the Kinsey scale. It was a no brainer for me to get into that kind of company."

Do any of you share this opinion?

Had to google the Kinsey scale.  I'm a 0 but put me on the course with Tiger and I'm a 6. ;-)

Did not want to sit around twiddling my thumbs while waiting for my kids, so I started hitting balls. Took lessons, played like crap, got frustrated because "What's so hard about hitting a ball into a hole." Now, playing well enough to score. I'm hooked.

I had to google too. Took the online test and was rated as a 0 even though I'm totally down with orgies and threesomes. I guess they give a guy a little latitude...

0 here too, and I don't know if the makeup of people who golf is different here than over where that guy was from or what but I can't think of anyone that would score high on that test.

I started golfing because my Dad golfed and I wanted to spend more time with him. Unfortunately I started when I was already in my late teen years and didn't care about getting better. Had I put actual work into getting better back then I may actually be decent now.

With the online TEST it is easy to get a 0 if you are dishonest but try answering the same questions  plugged into a lie detector and most golfers would achieve between 4 and 5.

That's basically projecting your opinion of what you expect people would answer. I was dead honest with my question answering and got a 0.

I play golf because I discovered how great the game is thank's to woods and his game on sony.

I started playing golf for the exercise of walking, the challenge of learning something new, and being retired so that I finally had enough time to try it.  Growing up, my father always wanted me to play with him and I 'never had the time.'  Boy, do I now regret not doing that.  Been playing 9 years now and am totally addicted.

Started years ago with my wife and a few friends, and the line of work I was in expected it. Once i left that line of work and got feed up I stopped playing.

My son got me back in the game last year, so once again I am back at it. One because i love spending time with him and know it will be a couple years and he will be off to collage. Two I love the game just wish I was better and had more time to play.

A buddy of mine started playing when we were in our early teens, and he got me started and I got hooked. I lived in a rural area, so before I started driving there were no neighborhood pickup basketball/football games. I did like baseball, but outside of school, just didn't do it much. I could play golf by myself though, and had room in the yard to get started. It would be a nice story if I could say I played in the yard everyday and became great, but as you see by my handicap, that is not the case, LOL! It is the only sport that I have ever had a real desire to improve at, though.

that is funny!!

I started playing back in the mid 90's cuz my boss did.. so i went out and bought a set of clubs for his buddy who owned a golfing store.. this was in 1995...  continued playing for a bit, then gave it up and got back into it in 2000.... why? cuz my coworkers played and it was something to do on my day off...

i stopped again in like 2002, and picked it back up in 2008,  why?  cuz my dad and brother also played...  which was more of a my dad got hooked on playing from my brother lol.... So I went out and bought "another" set of clubs and joined in on the fun.. i didnt really play in 2010 or 11.. but got back into it hard core this spring, and love playing....

I love playing golf because its one of those games that you will never be perfect at all the time... everyone has a bad day or a good day..... And yes like the OP quoted   you can go out on the course with the most goofiest outfit you can find and nobody thinks anything of it... So i have bunch of bright purple / pink/ blue / orange polo shirts that i can wear without someone saying anything about them..... as for the shorts i have not gone there yet... only cuz they are kind of expensive lol...

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
