Ever play with a guy like this...?

During a marathon round on Sunday, we got matched up with this guy on the front 9. Nice enough guy, and a pretty good player as well. But after pretty much every swing he would say "oh yeah, NICE swing!! OH....OH....here comes the draw, oh yeah baby."

He wasn't saying it at us or anything, just to himself, but if you were close enough you could hear it. I thought it was funny but it really annoyed my partner, which was also funny.

The conviction with which he said these things was the funniest part...I mean he really passionately would say "YES, ohhhh beeeeautiful swing Jeff." (his name was Jeff).

On the 5th hole my partner was using a divot tool to mark his ball, it wasn't stuck in the green, just laying flat. This guy must have thought that it fell out of my partners pocket, because he walked over picked it up, handed it to him and said "did you lose this?"

We took our best guess as to where the ball was. He missed the 5 foot putt and I ended up winning the hole. My partner had pretty much had with him at that point.

LOL! Funny story. I haven't played with anyone who talks to themselves, but I have played with someone who picks up your markers, and he doesn't seem to get the idea of marking a ball, like one of my partners put down a £1 coin to mark his ball, and the guy picked it up, then on the next hole he did exactly the same!

Have you seen the Seinfeld episode "The Jimmy?" Not sure if that is what the episode is called. The guy refers to himself as Jimmy.

I sometimes talk to the ball "draw, draw, come on draaaw!" but quietly. If I really duff one, I mutter something like "Jeez, that sucked". I can't recall referring to myself in third person though! lol

I may yell at the ball every once in a while or try to coax it with some body language, but you don't catch me masturbating my own ego every time I hit a nice shot.

I always talk to myself when I'm playing alone. I play much better, but I'm not sure if it's the talking or the fact that I don't have any partners. I feel like an idiot though.

I've been known to get some nice kicks and bounces after talking to the ball. That's about the extent of my talk. I don't do play by play on my swing or ball flight. Just an occasional, "kick left" or "get up" or "get away from there". I do a little hip thrust when I feel my ball is going to come up short. Just a little boost of invisible power. Seems to work.

I've played with "ball-talkers" before, but not to Jeff's extent there. I'm not a fan of them, and I'm certainly not one myself.

That is hilarious. It reminds me of some of the characters they had on Sex and the City who would say funny things during sex.

I'm pretty muted in terms of talking to the ball...an occasional "get there darlin'" or "stretch!"

I talk to trees: "Come on, SPIT IT OUT."

I talk to myself: "OH THAT WAS JUUUUUSSST LOVELY...YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE OUT HERE YOU FRICKIN CHOPPER!!"

A lot of us talk to the ball, definitely. He wasn't really doing that at all, he was mostly just congratulating himself on what a perfect golf swing he has.

These were not shots that were heading towards the trees and he was pleading with the ball to draw back into the fairway. These were shots right down the pipe (I'll certainly give him that, he hit a nice ball) and when they had a little draw on them he'd be like "yup...there it is, the draw, wow what a swing."

this reminds me of a time my friend and i played our local course. we were 13 so we could only walk and another couple was riding in a cart. on the 7th hole i hit for eagle from 140 yards out and lone and behold the guy drives up to the green and picks my ball out of the hole while i was still walking towards the green. I was really looking forward to taking the ball out myself.

Oh definitely. He was a nice guy...just a little self absorbed.

Plus it had taken about 2 hours to play 5 holes so everyone was getting into a pretty bad mood out there. I told my partner it was his fault for not using a traditional ball marker.

I've played with guys who talk themselves, but it goes more like this:

"you goddamn SOB get off the goddamn course you ****ing loser who can't hit a ****ing ball you idiot" etc.
