Chipping from rough

So I've had a little difficulty chipping from the rough. It's atleast 2 inches long but kinda of sparce. It's hard to explain but it's not really blades like you see on tv but kind of like roots with blades on the end. The ball pretty much sits on the ground unless I place it, where I can get it just high enough to get a club on it. I'll try and post some pictures. Anyone have any advice on how to go about playing this shot? I can get the ball up and all but have trouble with spin and carrying the ball consistently. Also if I don't open the face all the way then it almost stops the club Also the grass is like 3 inches but bends around so lays a little lower Thanks

This is the lie I usually get This is the best I can get it, pretty good with a lie like this but hardly get it

Check out Butch Harmon in Butch's Basics , p. 32 of Nov. Golf Digest .

He suggests using a wedge to sweep through the ball, in almost a putting stroke. BH says this makes it less likely you'll pop the ball up.

you know I tried that today, with less wrist hinge and worked decent but club got pretty caught up, didn't think I was doing it right so stopped. Will try though

Got to use more of a pitching motion, rather than a chipping move.  So weight forward, shaft close to neutral at set-up, soft arms, clubhead swings, lots of speed.

Dave Stockton's book, Unconscious Scoring , basically says to pitch when you cannot make clean contact with the ball.  Chip when you can.

Couple ways to look at it

chip - played with much more of a putting stroke, no wrist hinge, using the leading edge,

pitch - wrist hinge/cock, using the bounce.  Pitches give you a much larger margin of error because you can use the bounce.

I prefer using a more wide swing to rip tough that stuff. from short positions I will open a wedge to increase bouche and loft and have enough speed to avoid rough slowing blade a lot. pay balle back in stance to get purest contact possible.

of course like you say : distance and spin is a gamble, but thats what you get from a ball lying deep into rough. should have missed elsewhere.

I don't get to play many rounds but practice a bunch and I don't really like to practice from the fairway because I am pretty good at it and never get it. HOLY CRAP!! You could lose one of your kids in that! I was going to say putting stroke with a 5 but where I am the rough is only a taller version of the fairway.

With the ball settled into Bermuda rough, a swing very much like a sand shot is called for. Open the blade, cut across the ball, sending it up in the air and not catching in the tangled junk.  In your case, Nick, just use your 3 iron, drop your hands and use friction to get it out.

I was going to say putting stroke with a 5 but where I am the rough is only a taller version of the fairway.

this is just the practice green. The course is actually thick with grass but it dosnt it down in dirt so i have no trouble hitting there

Look no divot mark on the putting green. Meaning you can get underneath the ball, with a high bounce wedge, and not have to worry about how hard the surface is because you don't even need to hit the surface.

Wow, so your saying open the face up and do that not just chip it with a square face. And that is more consistant

Chipping has its place, but using the bounce gives you so much leeway it's just the better option. We posted them before, check out the pitching videos by Erik on the forum. Especially from hard pan, pitch the ball.
