its a tradition, its been done for years, nobody is going to stop doing it.

Who will stop 'em? I know one guy who will stop is the guy who yells it in my ear.

I actually met the guy yelling in people's ear at an LPGA event... and he DID stop given that I was a lot bigger than him.

I semi-agree with this, It comes down to where you want the game to be in todays world. Really there's going to be conflict when some people want the game to be like old times where everyones a gentlemen. Or you want it to be commercialized and popular amongst every available audience. Its John Daly vs. Bobby Jones.

I would love for golf to revert back to the old days with one exception... the exclusionary part. I would rather discriminate against the IDIOTS and not the blue collar workers and others who were left out of clubs back in the day. As far as etiquette and gentleman are concerned... that was a good thing.

Seeing as how golf is a game that is played between the ears aswell as on the course I dont see anything wrong with a spectator yelling something that encourages the golfer, or wishes generally good things for him, as long as its after the swing.

I remember a few years back when DL III was playing a tournament, cant remember the name of it though, and he was playing with Tiger. After Tiger hit a great drive down the fairway Davis Love stepped up to the tee and hit an errant shot into the gallery or woods, or something of that nature. Someone in the crowd, a moron, said " No LOVE, for Davis today. " Davis Love proceeded (spelling ) to get the guy escorted off of the Course Grounds.

So with that said, I do believe that golfers dont mind specators in the crowd yelling "certain" things during a round. In fact, I think many of them enjoy it.

When I was at TPC Scottsdale for the Open, I saw Sean O'Hair (I believe) hole one out from 50 or so yards for a birdie. As soon as it hit the green and began rolling, I kinda yelled(not really loud) get in there. I think saying it on drives is obnoxious, but when you really are there watching these great players, you do get caught up in the moment.

I don't understand why golfers at the professional level haven't developed the level of concentration and focus of other pro athletes.

A basketball or baseball player is going to hear MUCH worse from the crowd than "get in the hole," or a camera click, yet they never let it bother them. In fact, they will say that they rarely even hear the crowd, due to their level of focus.

Whereas a golfer gets disrupted because someone took a picture... Makes pro golfers look like real princesses.

I honestly wonder if you are a real golfer. Have you ever been on the course or the range for that matter and someone yells in the middle of your backswing. Do you know what happens? You flinch, not all the time, but enough to where you throw the club off of its intended path. Golf is a concentration sport, where basketball and football you could be playing loud music through speakers and every person in the crowd can be yelling and it wont matter. If you dont think this is true and golfers are still lil' princesses, let your friends yell in the middle of every swing you take and see if you get used to it. I guarentee you wont.

This is a stupid comment... in baseball being off by a few centemeters doesn't mean you had a bad at bat... in golf it can mean finding the trees or hazard or worse. In all the other sports you mentioned, there are numerous people acting and reacting at the same time, in golf that is not the case. You are comparing apples and grapefruits. I agree with the above poster who doubts you even really play golf.

You don't have to yell anything out. Polite or enthusiastic applause is all that is required. Of course you can yell "Go!" or something if a tee shot on a par 3 looks like it might stop just short of the hole, but not some unoriginal nonsense on a tee. It's about as funny as someone saying "1" when their golfing partner bumps his ball off the tee at address. This is all related to the reality TV thing where spectators feel like they're part of the action. Please don't someone now write "But there'd be no players without spectators etc." This thread is about obnoxious morons in the gallery, not crowds.

Put me on a free-throw line in front of 20,000 opposing fans, put me at bat in front of 50,000, or put me in a PGA tournament at the tee box, and I guarantee you I will flinch at the slightest comment!

When Kobe Bryant is shooting a potential game-winning free throw, he doesn't give a darn what someone might say to him. When David Ortiz is on the mound in the bottom of the ninth with two on and two out, again he doesn't care what you say to him. In fact, he probably won't even remember hearing anything, regardless of the outcome.

But if I snap a camera at the wrong time, a PGA pro is going to completely flinch, lose his cool, and try to have the offender tossed from the arena. It just doesn't make sense. If it's any consolation, I make the same argument with tennis. It's not the noise, it's the country club history of these two sports that says "fan participation and noise is bad." It has raised generations of players that are not able to generate the proper level of focus and concentration.

Let's imagine for a moment, the PGA changes rules such that cheering and noise are encouraged at all times. What do you think would happen? Some players would adapt, others would falter. Eventually, the only pros to make it on the PGA tour would be those able to put aside the noise, and concentrate only on their shot.

Right now, golfers haven't had to develop that skill. And in comparison to sports that have had to, it makes golfers (and tennis players) look soft.

As for this, I'm wondering: what of the NFL, with the recent accusations of piped in noise during visitors' drives? They've reached the pinnacle of their chosen profession, and it was still a bother. Also, in the sports you mentioned, the spectators aren't close enough to hear an individual. There's a big difference between thousands and one, and a big difference between consistent noise and sudden noise. Does it bother you when people hold a conversation 50 feet away from you when you are preparing to hit and continue it well until the ball has left the club? What about when they start during your downswing?
