"The man who invented me does not want me, the man who bought me does not need me, the man who needs me does not know."

That's a coffin. I've always heard it as "the man who built me doesn't want me."

Read the rules in the first post. It doesn't say that either. :-)

Just saw this on Reddit.  It's in the grey area between "riddle" and "joke," but, hey, since nobody has posted anything new yet, at least I'm "reviving" the thread, right? ...

Isn't there a band with a one-armed drummer? A really famous band? Like a spotted animal that's hard of hearing?

That is also mis-spelled?

Not sure who you could possibly be referring to. ;)

You hold a gymnastics competition with four competitors competing in three events.

Your events are the beam, the vault, and the floor exercise.

Determine where each competitor placed in each competition using these clues:

  • Amy finished 3rd in the floor exercise.
  • The girl who came 2nd in the vault won the beam.
  • The girl who came 2nd on the beam won the floor exercise.
  • Sarah beat Molly in every event.
  • T he girl who won the vault came 2nd on the floor exercise.
  • June came last in the vault.

Yep. Those are easy if you know what to do. Kind of like a Sudoku.

I had a little time to kill while waiting for some epoxy to cure:

Here is the solution to that cylinder problem, worked it out long-hand so I hope it is readable:

I would not have attempted it if I didn't know it could be simplified. Thanks, Erik.

and that's the hard way - I did it that way too.

So - Since the final answer didn't have radius in it, just 'h', that means you can pick a cylinder of any radius you like - as long as h=6

I'd try the cylinder where radius approaches zero.......

that means the bead's diameter approaches h

that means the cylinder and cap volumes approach zero

So you are left with the volume of a sphere -

V = 4/3 pi r^3:   where r = h/2 = 3

V = 36 pi

proof your answer is correct......

another  - I have a number in mind.  It's either 1, 2, or 3.  Guess my number - you can ask me one question and I'll answer it 'yes', 'no', or "I don't know"

(goal - find a question that gives you the right answer no matter which number I chose)

Wouldn't be fair for me to answer this one ... seeing as how the ONLY reason I know the answer is because I saw this question the other day at the same place I found the water lily question. ;)
