Ok, so we all want a better golf swing. That's fine. But here's what needs to happen to make it effective.

For all motor skills to be properly executed, there must be little thought about "how" and more thought of just doing it. When you throw a ball, what are you thinking about? Your elbow or your wrist? No. You're thinking about throwing the ball towards the target. And I bet you can throw perfectly fine. So the golf swing, once you have the basics down, you should make it automatic. It shouldn't be consciously controlled. Just swing and hit. It really is that simple.

Well better swings are naturally less thinking and more doing.

But your idea already has a thread! :-D

Another @xerex250 thread, eh?

You seem to (wrongly) assume that people are actively "working" on their golf swings on the golf course (some are, most aren't).

Guess what? When you throw a ball, you don't think about it… unless you want to try to get better, in which case you work with a pitching coach, or whomever, and you study and practice different techniques so you can throw with more curve, more accurately, or more speed.

Just like in golf.

Sure, because you and me are relatively mediocre at throwing a ball, and have come to expect relative mediocrity. If you're a MLB pitcher or a quarterback, you're practicing mechanics a good deal of the time. None of them just knew how to throw a slider, they all spent time practicing it.

Hmmm. Some people can't throw hard enough to break an egg on a wall and others would miss the wall entirely.

I suppose you are right. I could just accept my natural shot shape and tendencies and the scoring limitations they carry with them and just GO PLAY! There is certainly a value in that if you can find enjoyment in it and in all honesty that is how I played the sport for a long time. Eventually I got tired of playing a slice and always aiming to the left and taking whatever I could get from the results. I actually really enjoyed playing that way too, but I eventually decided it was time to put some real work into learning the proper mechanics and working towards having some control over my game. I hasn't really shown up much in my scores but it has shown up a little and I'm pretty confident that I'm inching towards a breakthrough that I would never attain through self teaching/hacking around. I also have heard it said that the last place improvement shows up is on the scorecard.

In any case, to each his own. You would probably love the teachings of Ernest Jones and Manuel de la Torre . Probably right up your alley. In fact I have a copy of de le Torre's book, if you pay the shipping I'll mail it to you.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

Yep it is pretty much seeing that one extra shot every round that is closer and closer to how you want it.

Sure you can throw it fine with just relative accuracy, not a lot of precision and still hit the strike zone from 60' and not have to think about it much.  That same variant percentage from 250 yards is a much different story.  You cannot compare the two effectively IMO.

Off topic a bit but, a bad shoulder cost me a potential HOF pitching/center fielding career but that is another story...

So just learn the basics, become mindless, and boom, it is that simple?  We should not work to build a repeatable swing that can produce the highest amount of precision and accuracy and make that automatic?

    • It's true that it is not always clear where to draw the line of "significant". But I would argue that saving half a stroke or more is definitely more than significant. According to the common meaning of "significant", which is all we have because the word is not defined elsewhere in the rules.  This is irrespective of the two stroke penalty for playing from a wrong place. That penalty is only for when there was no significant advantage.  And it is possible to tell to some certainty whether a stroke or half a stroke was saved by such tools as strokes-gained, experience of officials, etc. Applying the conditions listed in the definition of serious breach.  In the example in which a player gave themselves free relief from a boundary object, if relief was necessary, then that wrong place gave a significant advantage.  Though apparently there is some sort of verbal tradition that tournament officials have a higher standard of what they consider "significant". Much higher than one stroke. And they like to take into account that the player already received a two-stroke penalty, though that is not in the rules for determining what is a "significant advantage".
    • Until I can find some positive things to post about my swing I think it’s about time to…
    • How would you change the rule to make it more "fair", and still be consistently interpreted and enforced?  It may not be perfect, but as a referee I can watch a player and look at the ground surface and make a ruling.  How can it be changed to address different players and their individual height, weight, and shoe size?
    • A bit old.. but this rule is kind of unfair ...  Lets say that you have Emiliano Grillo and Darren Clark playing together on a PGA event and on one hole both hit the ball to the middle of the fairway only 1 inch apart. When they arrive to the ball Darren take his stand and water comes out from the ground and remains there so he procceds take a free drop on a dry area and hit his shot.  Afterwards Grillo takes his stance in the same spot as Clark, but because he is a lot ligther, no water araise from the ground. According to the rules he is not allowed a free drop from the same spot darren had a free drop seconds before. I would love to see this happenning live on TV. Can an argument be made by grillo? could and official use the "spirit of the rule" to let him have a free drop?
