I've been asked to take a position where I'll be in charge of running a room that on a daily basis may contain CEO's, celebrities (mainly of the b + c list variety, of course I won't say that at work), & other very talented people. It would be stupid not to take it, so I did, but I know it's going to be intense and I'd be lying if I said I'm not sweating it a bit. I have a couple months to learn a ton of things.

If anyone has any stress tips w/ dealing with extremely driven/talented individuals, I'm all ears.

Congrats! Never dealt with celebs but I've managed lots of situations with high powered business people. My advice: let the game come to you. Not sure what you'll be doing but I'd advise against speaking much unless it's required. Then the obvious good manners, etc., but don't kiss ass. You'll lose their respect quickly.

Thanks. As far as the bold goes, I'll be helping them to try & come up w/ creative ways to sell their merchandise, so each meeting will be different depending on what we're selling. Luckily I'll only have to be dealing with max...3 or 4 people at a time & not a whole boardroom of people. They'll come in and explain their product and then I start the brainstorm.

That sounds pretty interesting. So, all my advice holds true except the not talking part. Sounds like you'll be driving the conversation. Even so, it's their idea so let em ramble and bring it back when u have to. Good luck, sounds like a challenge. Edit: I'd add the suggestion to watch a bunch of Shark Tank episodes. Seems you'll be doing the same thing.

The first thing I thought of when shadowing the position was Shark Tank. It's pretty intense and yeah...interesting. I can't be negative about the product though (like Shark Tank can be) since they're already a client and I have no say in the production...just the marketing aspect. Actually, it makes me want to watch Mad Men again.

That seems very interesting.. What do you do when the product is something you absolutely hate or think has no chance?

Haha, pretend very hard to love it and give it some sort of lovable angle. I've seen so many things presented that just make you go, W....T....F.

You'd be surprised how many people will buy absolute shit just because a celebrity endorses it though.

Did you end up moving to Florida?

Still planning on it. Still working on getting my wife into it. This past month I'd send her texts/pics of Florida weather and she'd try to find something negative (like the other day that giant ass alligator on the Florida golf course was the negative, haha).

I've promised that we wouldn't make the move until winter. So I'll likely won't be looking at jobs until Fall. I'll be talking to a couple HR people in the meantime (looking at the Golf Channel atm).

How do you feel about the job title "Director of Happiness"? I take care of three big bosses and two lesser bosses and I handle customer service and make the coffee. So I gave myself the title, but our salesman says it isn't professional. Bear in mind, this is a salesman who meets customers in cargo shorts and those Birkinstok clogs and ill-fitting shirts and a ball cap.

Also, just venting now, but I sold my old fridge to make space for the new one, and it was a bit grungy inside so when I moved it outside I was gonna give it a gentle inside rinse with the hose, and when I pulled the hose out, it tore the hell out of my plumbing under the house. So I had to shut off the main water line at the meter, go to town, buy some PVC pipe and a t-joint and a new cutoff joint and a new spigot joint, and get that all fixed. Why can't anything be simple? Not that it isn't easy to fix PVC. You'd have to be a complete idiot to not work with it because it is so simple. Just the time and interrupting the whole day to get it done. And on top of it, I somehow hyper-extended my knee, so know I'm gimpy.

Lastly, when checking my eBay page just now where I ordered some cool Chromax golf balls, I see that somehow last night, after a few too many beers, I ordered a new pocket knife. Now, there is nothing wrong, EVER, with having a quality Case pocket knife, but drunk ordering is not something you need to make a habit of.

Obviously you, ebay, and the fumes from the pvc glue were in too close a proximity to each other.

OK, I'm taking applications. But the review process requires repairing PVC, changing the oil in the car, basic powertool operation, and pocket knife assessment. If I find one of those little keychain knives like you buy off the counter at the service station, that's not gonna fly.

I can do all of the above, with skill even, although I pay for all of that now so guess I'm not up to snuff. Used to carry a Buck knife for years but alas, I no longer do that either. Damn!

I don't care if people pay to get that stuff done, just so they actually know how to do it if needed. I'm astonished at how ignorant young men are these days. I changed a lady's tire on the side of the road once, and she was there with a teenage son, maybe 14, and neither of them had a clue what to do. And listen, I'm a girly girl. Just because you're girly doesn't mean you have to be ignorant or helpless in the world.

Get that pocket knife. Highly recommend Case. They are so tight. Worth every penny.

    • Going to a Friendsgiving tomorrow and I am bringing a no-bake cheesecake. I make the crust too big, but I think it turned out good. The filling is really good.
    • Sure, but how was your alignment? 🙂 Day 53 - 2024-11-22 Mirror work after getting back home. Wife is a superstar for her career/job/whatever.
    • I would say your back nine is the second nine you play that day. It's part of what makes getting some of those holes tougher. Or, if 18 holes are played pretty often, out of A, B, and C, and you often play A and C, A is the front and C is the back, regardless of the order you play them in. That way not birdieing C #7 isn't overcome by birdieing the easier A #7 on a day you played it C-A instead of A-C. But, at the end of the day, nobody really cares except yourself.
    • Day 128: played 9. Nice little even 9, with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys.
    • @DeadMan, I think your approach makes sense. As @dennyjones said, consistency is the key.
