... the extra time has no clock so it will go on forever until a team scores.

Ahhh ... hockey style!!  Would be worth a try.

Gotta be honest, though, when those NHL playoff games go into the 5th or 6th overtime I usually start rooting for somebody NOT to score so the game will just keep on going.

The problem with the game's extra-time rules are that the risk of giving up a goal far exceeds the reward of potentially breaking the tie without going to penalties. Here's a (probably) needlessly complicated proposal: One Goal or Two. The first half of extra time is played as normal; the score at the break dictates the endgame scenario going forward.

  • If a team has a two-goal advantage after 15 minutes, the match is over (a modification of the short-lived silver goal rule UEFA introduced in the early 2000s).
  • If there is a tie after 15 minutes, the match ends immediately upon the next goal scored (the golden goal rule implemented by FIFA from 1992-2004).
  • If a team has a one-goal advantage after 15 minutes, the match may end after the second half of extra time if no more goals are scored (the standard extra time rules), or immediately upon a second goal by the leading team (a modification of the golden goal rule). If the trailing team scores a tying goal in the second half of extra time, the golden goal rule applies thereafter.
  • If the score remains tied at the end of extra time, the winner is decided by a penalty shootout.

I like the current format. The risk/reward issue makes the game so tense.

I think that in the case of ties they should play six-on-six or even five-on-five for as much time as it takes to score a golden goal.

Kind of like hockey's regular season overtime period (before they resort to the stupid shootout).

Commercial break during the water break?! Nooooooo

Sweaty guys hydrating vs. another look at Adriana Lima in a mini dress ... Seems like a no-brainer to me. ;)

Commercial break during the water break?! Nooooooo

Even our commercial station (which is carrying this game) wouldn't do that, as much as any advertisers would be commiting commercial suicide for running during a match.

I do wonder even more what they're thinking with one eye on Qatar though

Mind you this is FIFA, who are no better than the archetypal banana republic. When their senior vice president (an Argentine) explained that he voted for Qatar ahead of the US, because a vote for the US would be like a vote for England, and he couldn't do that until we gave them the Falklands islands back, you realise what you're up against with this terminally corrupt fiefdom

I woluldn't be averse to UEFA (who are hardly squeaky clean, but compared to FIFA a paragon of virtue) breaking away

It was very fishy when Qatar won the bid in my opinion.. Then again I think we both agree that the process is so upside down that there is significant doubt of a "clean process" no matter who wins.. I mean come on, even the States winning a bid for the cup was strange for a country at the time that basically had nothing to do with soccer.. The only thing that was there was some sort of interest in getting into the potential commercial market called the US.. Same exact thing with Qatar in my opinion.. I'm not sure if you guys realize, but as bad as the Arabs are in soccer compare to Europe and South America they breath, eat and drink soccer.. They don't really know or care for any other sports.. I lived in the ME when I was younger and until in moved to mass I didn't even know there were other sports in the world.. Strange but true.. Where am I going with this, well the revenue that will be generated by having the WC in the ME and the possible future bank roll was enough to get a vote for Qatar.. Was there bribery envolved? I would say yes, can I prove it.. Don't care to!

I like Holland, just not when they're playing a North (or Central) American team. ;)

Agreed. Unless that North American team is Mexico. Hahahahah

    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
