I'm, admittedly, not in your area and could not care less about either the Browns or the Steelers, but I am pretty confident you are wrong about this.  (BTW, I'm speaking generally here, not about you in particular, and I also acknowledge that it might be a little different IN Cleveland.)  This is very typical about fans of the worse team in a big rivalry.  They have nothing else to hang on to because their team is always bad, so they take solace when the rival is doing bad.  The fans of the better teams have a lot less energy to bother spending towards the other team.  I can find you an awful lot of Mets fans that despise the Yankees with all of their being, but I don't know any that care the other way.  The same used to be true for Red Sox fans - pre 2004.  (Not so much now though ;))

I also imagine that there are not too many Packers fans out there that worry too much about what the Lions or Vikings are doing either. (Right @cipher?) ;)

Clippers fans rejoice when the Lakers suck, Lakers fans (tides may be turning tho) just thought the Clippers fans were cute.

I stated it in my vote up but worth mentioning here too.  Mets fans hate the Yankees.  Yankees fans don't even acknowledge the Mets play in professional baseball.

Now there are some sports and sports fans where the hatred is so strong that they do care - Islanders fans hate the Rangers and Ranger fans hate the Islanders.  Red Sox fans hate the Yankees and Yankee fans hate the Red Sox.

I'm not sure if the Browns and Steelers are like the Mets and Yankees or Yankees and Red Sox.

20 years ago? Yankees/Red Sox.

Since the franchise was brought back? Yankees/Mets

I have a feeling it'll be trending back toward the former soon...

The Yankee/Red Sox rivalry is nothing like it used to be since the Sox have won 3 titles.  I have many friends that are Yankee fans, so other than jabs and digs when times are tough, it is pretty tame.  Heck, Jeter and Rivera got massive ovations when they retired.  This wouldn't have happened 20 years ago.

FWIW, I would like to see the Browns do well.  They seem to get close, then fade.  I like Hoyer as a QB.

All the die hard Yankee fans I know hate the Red Sox.  They might respect them, but they hate them.  Most would rather see any other team make it to the playoffs over the Red Sox so maybe Red Sox fans are nicer or less passionate about baseball.

The venom is always greater from the team who is down at the moment. I used to hate the Yanks when they had Piniella, Jackson and Martin but since the Sox have 3 titles now this century (Yanks have 1?), my ire has abated a lot. Plus, hard to hate guys like Jeter, Williams, Torre. Don't think Boston fans are any less passionate and many still guzzle the Haterade but I think as a Nation, we're pretty content which diminishes the hatred.

In this day and age - of players changing teams so often - I don't get harboring a big hatred for any particular team.

I heard Jarryd Hayne quit rugby to because he wants to play in the NFL. Will he make a team?

I have Aussie friends from Sydney that support the team he plays for.  He's a good athlete, but there is a lot of competition to get into the NFL.  He seems to like the idea of returning kicks, so we'll see how that goes.

I'll give him about a 10% chance at actually making a roster. Which may be high.

Having played rugby in college, a lot of the skill-set is transferable...but the learning curve in the NFL is tough, and there are thousands of guys probably at or close to his level of athleticism sitting on a practice squad somewhere.

Agree.  I played in college and after college as well.  One issue he may have is directional.  In rugby, you always want to move forward and you don't have blockers.  A good returner will use their blocking and may move laterally to gain yardage.

I would guess (and that's all it is) that he has about a 70% chance. Wish I knew his 40 time so I could make a slightly more educated guess (even though we all know that's not everything).

My reasoning is that he would have an advantage over guys on a practice squad or borderline college players that are undrafted free agents because it would be a great chance to increase interest in the NFL to a new market.

To return a kick you get the ball and you run with it and hope you cross the goal line before somebody takes your head off. Not exactly rocket science. ;-)

Time in the 40 is sort of like a quote from Whitey Herzog one time when asked about somebody throwing 100 mph "making them a pitcher". He said "No it won't make you a pitcher but if any of you guys out there can throw 100 mph I will certainly give you a shot."

To the bold: The guys making roster decisions couldn't care less about increasing the NFL's interest to a new market.

For the last line, that's absolutely not true. Not even close. There's a reason there are only a couple really good kick returners in the NFL.

Well you are certainly entitled to your opinions. NFL teams make "bubble cuts" all the time based on the draw a player can provide.

As to the last: It was tongue in cheek and a joke. SMH!!!

It was hard to tell...a lot of people actually think that lol

With that said, I still think he's a year or two away from even being a "bubble cut" type player. NFL has a learning curve, you can't just go from never playing, to playing at the highest level in 6 months.

One of the teams featured on HBO's Hard Knocks had invited a rugby player to tryouts but he didn't make the cut.  I played club rugby one year in college, other than indoor lacrosse, toughest sport I ever played.  Some of the skills are transferrable but I'm not sure they would be at a level required to make it in the NFL.

The Patriots have a special teams/occasional safety named Nate Ebner who played rugby in college. Probably a career special teamer though, which makes sense given his background. I played for a few years in high school. Can't speak to how transferrable the skills are, but it's a really fun sport.

Jets just completed a trade with Seattle for Percy Harvin.  Jet's gave up a conditional mid-round draft pick in next years draft.  It looks like Rex is trying to address the lack of weapons Geno has, especially deep.  If Harvin stays healthy and helps the Jets win a few games it might be worth it.
