I guess everyone is entitled to their suspicions, but Tiger's entitled to the benefit of the doubt.   I still think his decision to endorse Muscle Pharma, or whatever it is, was pathetic--as a business decisions it amounted to gross mismanagement of the Tiger brand and moronic milking of his brand equity--but that's neither here nor there.  But, putting on my lawyer hat, 'guilt by association' is every bit as pathetic.

Playing through an injury may (or may not) be heroic.  Coming back too soon never is.  It's a mistake.  And, with Tiger, a pattern is developing.  At this rate, sooner or later it's going to cost him the twilight of his career.

I don't consider his deal with Muscle Pharm any worse of a decision than I do Furyk's endorsement of 5 Hour Energy.  Sports supplements are a big market and MusclePharm is one of the legit companies out there, even the UFC has an endorsement deal with them and they are very active in eliminating PED's from professional sports.

As to his  coming back too soon, I agree.  I don't know if he's so obsessed with beating Jack's record or if he can't handle being out of the limelight but he does seem to push himself too hard and come back before he's ready which ultimately sets him back longer.  You'd think a guy with the money he has and family would just be willing to enjoy the summer with his kids, rehab his injury and start fresh next season fully recuperated.

I'd d be lying if I didn't admit that 49.999% of me now thinks: Ahhhh..the tertiary affects of chronic PED use continue to manifest. I can't think of another athlete in history who was in the drivers seat to shatter so many records...wait...what's up, A-Rod?

The other half of me gives him the benefit of the doubt. There's been plenty of elite athletes whose bodies have broken down as a result of improper, or overtraining. Griffey Jr. immediately comes to mind. He's one of the only power hitters of the previous generation who was never mentioned/implicated with PED use. It's quite possible Tiger's work ethic is also the catalyst for his poor physical health - not PEDs.

Um, not so much. Tiger is/was in shape, but wasn't bulky. You'll see average sized guys that don't juice in every gym in America that make Tiger look small. If I'm lucky I can work out 3 times a week and my arms are 17" flexed.

I'm not talking about body builder ornamental bulk, I'm talking about functional strength.

I don't think he would use them..I am a little uncomfortable with his business relationship with Anthony Galea.

I guess that's what I'm trying to say. I don't think he would do it, but the fact that he associates with this particular doctor makes me suspicious.

You can be suspicious but here's a real world example.  My primary care physician was recently indicted for over prescription of pain meds.  I'd gone to this guy for 10 years and never gotten a pain medication script from him (I refuse to take them).  He was / is a great doctor, one of the few that made house calls to the elderly, knew his patients and their families and would actually spent time with you during a visit.  When I saw the report on the news about his indictment, I was in disbelief because I never had a clue he'd be involved in such a thing.

To assume every patient of Galea was a PED's user is no different than assuming every patient of my doctor was a oxy addict.

Suspicion is an extremely low standard. Basically there is some specific, articulable fact that could lead a reasonable person to conclude that Tiger has used PEDs. It's not "proof" as that term is typically used. I think suspicion is exactly the right word in Tiger's case.

Quote:

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (AP) -- Joe LaCava walked nearly every blade of grass on the 18th green at Valhalla Golf Club, jotting notes in his yardage book after stepping off the distances from every edge of the green to every possible pin position. It was just like any other Monday at a major.

The caddie just didn't know whether any of this information would be useful in the PGA Championship. LaCava was awaiting word on whether his boss -- Tiger Woods -- would be healthy enough to play the final major of the year.

"I'm optimistic," LaCava said after he finished charting the entire golf course. "I'm hoping he plays. So I'm just doing whatever work I would normally do."

The caddie was at Valhalla. So was his car, a silver SUV parked in the spot assigned to the four-time PGA champion.

As for Woods?

Stay tuned. His agent, Mark Steinberg at Excel Sports Management, said in an email that Monday would be too early for doctors to decide whether Woods could or even should try to play this week after another back injury.

He's got nothing better to do.

Heck, he might be hoping to pick up a bag there this week.  He hasn't been earning much off of his man in 2014 and I imagine he has some bills to pay......

I was wondering about that.  Do you think Tiger throws him some extra money or does he just lose out on potential income because Tiger is injured?

I should think there are arrangements for situations like this written down in the contract or something.

I'd think so but I know other caddies have carried the bag for other pro's when their guy was hurt or didn't get an invite.  I wonder if each pro has his own deal with their caddie.  I can't see Tiger wanting to share Joe after what happened with Stevie.

Maybe Tiger pays him to be his wingman when he's out clubbing on Saturday night..... :-)

If I was a millionaire I would pay my guy whether I played or not but I work for a couple of different millionaires and they are way tighter about letting go of a nickle than I am. My conclusion is that's the main reason they are millionaires and I am not. ;-)

Agree. God gave us reasoning so that we'd use it to protect ourselves from all manner of things.

But it only that rare doctor that will actually dispense PED's. The fact some weekend jock sat L:A Fitness does PED's has nothing to dop with a pro golfer doing, or not doing, PED's. They are unrelated. Tiger may or may not have done PED's. The reason to think he may have is that he associated with a doctor known for dispensing them. No more or less than that.

It would almost seem more fishy if he came straight back and played this week. That would really give all the conspiracy theorists (TW haters) something to chew on. Personally, I think he tweaked his back and really was suffering. Hope he comes back soon. I won't lie, he's still my favorite player to watch on Tour and I still think he will have the last laugh and get hot again and win another major one day

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
