I've been playing maybe 2.5 years and started kind of later in life (50's). I don't care about breaking 100, I just want to get to the point where I have no mis-hits, or close to that. I mean no severe topping, fat shots, wacky drives etc. Is that too much to ask? How long does it take to reach that point?

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

I started playing in my late 40's. Gave up the game for some years, now at 66, I took up the game last Oct. and joined this site. Along with the great info from some of the guys here, and a few lessons, I began using the 5 simple keys, hoping to get at least back to where I was back in the 90's and early 2000's. What I found was that the 5 simple keys has taken me beyond where I was, you have Priority keys to work on, you focus on that priority until you get it right, then move to the next, It Works, it's taken me 11 months so far, and I still look for improvement, but golf is Fun to play again. Here's a link to the 5 simple keys.

You posted "no severe......." shots. I think a golfer can accomplish decent ball striking for 18 holes while not scoring really well. I know in the past I have had quite a few rounds that I did not lose a ball, or have any penalty strokes. That to me can be considered a decent ball striking round.

How long does it take is totally dependent on how much quality practice and playing time you put into your game. In my case I was pleased with my rounds after a year or so. I was shooting scores in the mid/low 80s consistently. Of course I was also at the golf course 4-5 days a week in some capacity of practice and/or play.  I was a complete golf junkie for a number of years.

Get rid of the tops, fats and wild drives and you should break 100 and 90 whether you care to or not!! :)

Even the pros hit "wacky drives" and some fat shots. Did you see Webb Simpson's first tee shot at the Ryder Cup? LOL

Or Sergio driving the ball into no man's land.

How long does it take? That depends on so many variables. How much do you practice and HOW do you practice being a big one.

Golf is so silly that you may be just one day/practice away from grooving into a nice repeatable swing. Nothing is more fun when that happens. And don't get discouraged if you occasionally hit a bad shot, my father in law has been golfing for 50 years and he still hits fat shots and wacky drives. He'll shrug it off and par the hole.

Keep on keeping on, you'll get there.

"Keep on keeping on, you'll get there.  "

Appreciate your words of encouragement.Yes I often joke "even the pro's do that" after a bad shot. I guess it's just a matter of how often....

Interesting list of videos. Are they selling something? Looks like most of the info is free.

The OP is nearly 60 years of age.  All reasonable indicators suggest that his peak learning days are gone.  The peak, best, learning of course happens very early in life.  Play the violin or piano in the Univ orchestra?  Better start age 5.  Play golf for a living , better start before age 12.  Few exceptions. But the magic of golf is that the pleasure of success can be found even if a moderate player.  Anyone, and i mean granny too, can sink a 67 foot putt once in awhile.  Not one pro could ever do better than that.

IMO, gotta learn to enjoy the practice as much as the play. I luv hanging around the chipping green and testing various shots, different clubs, ball position, and putting the long and short ones.  But i can see that i will never improve as fast as the youth, nor as consistently.  He, the boy, learns correctly once and retains the memory.  I can't do that coz I'm too damn old.

They do have a DVD set available, however, a ton of the same drills, ect is available here. Another big help for you would be to video your swing, and post it in the Members Swing thread, that way you'll get some help from people that actually know what you need to do to get better. One thing I find in my old age is, to have Fun, and not get frustrated when something doesn't click the first few times, just keep at it, and you'll see results...best of luck to ya.

    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
    • Day 552, May 7, 2024 Played nine holes with @NatalieB with irons only from her tees. Didn't really finish out any holes, just hit the irons and approaches and some chips.
