I don't look for balls that I know are OB or in a water hazard. I certainly will never carry a ball retriever. I hit one out yesterday and my caddie found it. Told him to keep it but he doesn't play golf so he put it back in my bag. I gave it to a bag room kid when I was done.

But I will take the full five minutes to search for a ball in play. I hate losing a ball in play.

We are similar in this respect........ If the ball out of play, I don't even consider a search.  If it is in play, I will  look if I am in a 4-some and there is nowhere to go providing I my ball isn't in deep thicket that is unplayable. If it's in an area with a chance to play....Yea, I'll look.

If I am a single with nobody in front of me.....my search time shrinks to about 1 minute.  LOL........... It is what it is...and I don't like wading around in deep native areas hunting.  If I get lucky and my ball is "low hanging fruit" that is visible.....well, GREAT.....I will take that every time.   If not....I take a quick look to see if I get lucky and find it fast....Otherwise, I play the provisional and take the penalty.

I absolutely must use a new tee on each hole. No good can come of re-useing a tee. ... I don't know why.

I look at the GPS on my belt before every shot, even if I know the distance.

More stupid than a quirk but a couple of weeks ago I didn't have my GPS with me but still looked down at my belt for it before every single shot.

One would think I would have stopped looking for it as some point but I never did.

That reminded me of one, glove always goes in my back left pocket. I have a pair of shorts I really like, but won't wear because they have no left pocket.

The number of the ball I played used to be very very important to me. Out of a regular sleeve 1's and 4's are the only good ones, 2's not so good (no one putts), 3's worst (3 putting).

Been golfing over 40 years, I can remember going to the golf shop when I was in HS and college and buying a dozen balls, taking the sleeves of 2's and 3's out and replacing them with 1's and 4's from another box. You had to check each sleeve, I can remember opening a box and they were all 3's (someone like minded to me had been there first)

Titleists would rarely come in 5-6-7-8 boxes, and especially rarely in 9-10-11-12 boxes. Didn't play the 9-10-11-12's, don't remember why. Hardly ever saw them.

The absolute best and  coolest of all balls were the Titleist 7's and 8's, yet the 5's and 6's were as bad for you as the 3's.  You'd be in the golf shop, and see a box labeled 5-6-7-8 and your heart would skip a beat, but as always you had to check the sleeves, a lot of the time someone had already swapped out the 7's and 8's and the box was full of 5's and 6's (yuck).

If you played a Titleist 7 or 8, you were a golfer to be feared. Only low single digit players had them. You couldn't play them unless you were a low handicap, a least it seemed that way.

One time I went to the counter to buy a dozen 1's and 4's, the guy checked each sleeve and said that this box was improper and I had to buy 2's and 3's also. I asked as innocently as I could what he meant, he said that people came in and took all the good numbers, left all the bad numbers, and no one wanted to buy the bad numbers. They must have had loads of 2's and 3's that no one wanted to buy---

This was in SE Denver in the 1970's and 80's, at Wellshire and Dave Cook's, Gart Bros, etc. Must have been a local thing, haven't lived there for a long time though.

Now I play balls with numbers greater than 10, not a big deal, but I still cringe when I see a 2 or a 3.

And you can't play any ball you find, we all know that once a ball gets lost, it develops a taste for it, and wants to get lost again

Geezus, I got a headache reading this...

I like to work on something in the range before a round, get it sorted and completely disregard it once I start playing. Also I like the color red...tees, bag, marker...etc...

"My ball is on top of a rock in the hazard, do I get some sort of relief?"

I only use golf bags with 14 way dividers

My sweater or jacket always goes on the left pocket and the rain cover always on the right pocket of the bag

I will not look at the tee box markers almost to the point of pretending they are not there. It has screwed me up way too many times when trying to aim the ball. This is also true with looking at the grass in front of the tee box, again too many times the bias of the cut is not going in the direction where I want to hit my drive.

As a result- I hit a lot of fairways.

I don't know if this is considered a quirk or simply a bad habit, but I've never played golf without a pinch between the cheek and gum. I've never done it....

I've played golf a long time with all kinds of partners including business golf.  I never closed a big deal on the course, but I've closed some big deals with people I have had the opportunity to spend time to play some golf.

I only like natural tees and I refuse to add up my score until the rounds over!

Me to on adding up the scorecard. I'm so mental that I'll take whatever the number is too seriously. Better to let that ride till I hole out 18.

Can't stand it when my buddy insists on telling me where we stand on hole 17. I've had to talk to him about it a couple of times now.

I don't add up anything on my scorecard, and in fact don't even keep a scorecard in any round where I'm not required to keep one, but I can't help but know where I stand in relation to par at any given time.

The weirdest quirk I have is that I can remember nearly every shot (both club and result) of almost every single round of golf I've played. I also remember every single shot my group hit, for at least a month or two after the round is over. If there is ever a dispute about a score they always come to me and say, "what did Kevin make on 14?" Weird, although I never bring anything up unless asked.

This is funny for a couple of reasons. I lived in Denver for 23 years. Three is my favorite number. Before everything got shrink wrapped I would routinely take a the number 3 balls out of their boxes to make up a box of 12 threes. I never realized this was such common behavior among golfers.

Same, I can't stand it when each club doesn't have its own spot.

The other quirk I have is I used to dip a ton and since quit, but got used to it on the course.  So now I put about 5 sticks of mint bubblegum in (same flavor as my old dip flavor) and shove it in my bottom lip while I play.  It feels really wierd to play golf without a big ball of something minty in my bottom lip lol.  I've gotten some serious "wtf" looks on the first tee eating that much gum at once.

Weird phobia: I have to find a broken tee for irons and hybrids off the tee box! Anything else throws the earth off its axis!

Me too, agree wholeheartedly

I will use natural or white tees, and if I have a couple of broken ones in my pocket at the end of the round, I save them and reuse them for the aforementioned irons, shallow-faced other clubs. However when I am looking for a broken tee on a par three, I will use any color.

I like to use weird or sentimental things for ball markers i.e, a gold dollar my daughter got from the bottom of a pool and a punch out plug from an electrical junction box.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
