Kim overwhelmed by positive reaction to victory

NAPLES, Fla. – Christina Kim was greeted like a conquering hero when she arrived at the CME Group Tour Championship Monday afternoon.

It wasn’t so much that she conquered the field at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational for her first LPGA title in nine years. It was all that she conquered to get to that trophy, overcoming injuries and depression and a return to Q-School two years ago. She was greeted with one hug after another upon walking on to the grounds at Tiburon Golf Club.

“The outpouring is overwhelming,” Kim said.

Kim’s learning her story, her struggle with depression, something she shared in her blog and then in an in-depth story with Golf Digest two years ago, has resonated beyond golf.

“It’s pretty remarkable the number of tweets, emails, text messages and voice mails I’ve received from people,” Kim said. “I didn’t realize how much people have been following my story ... I didn’t realize I could make an impact like that.”

So her depression is cured now that she is successful again?

Which is to say I don't quite buy into this girl who cried depression. I read all those articles at the time and to me it seemed like what she was claiming was depression was more like disappointment in her flagging golf game/career. I.e. how most people would respond in that situation. During that media campaign she also attempted to characterize a momentary suicidal thought of hers as a suicide attempt . That really doesn't sit well with me. If all this had come from a player who didn't have a history of histrionics and attention-whoring, it might've gone over better.

Having dealt with a someone who has Narcissistic and Histrionic personality disorders, I agree with you. These people play the victim and get multitudes of people on their side and ride the wave like a pro surfer. It also is very difficult to discern whether or not the person is telling the truth about a matter which is another reason it is difficult to diagnose. The human side of me hopes this is a feel good story but the experienced side of me sees what you've pointed out and is skeptical to whether she really is or was "depressed". I understand that I may be perceived as a "wet blanket", I too have my doubts about her behavior.

Yeah, know where you are coming from. But still the underdog defying the odds story. Considering the reach of this story IMHO should be sold as a feel good regardless of whether she is genuine or not. I think quite a few will be/are genuinely inspired. Nothing good comes out of calling her out even if she was faking it. We will never truly know for sure anyway.

Maybe to her what she was dealing with was depression. She was the one dealing with it. I fail to see how what some armchair psychologists think is relevant.

I fail to see how this comment is relevant, which is based on the same reasons you provided with your comment. Your personal opinion.

We were casting out our experiences and observations. Sadly I know way more (than I really cared to) about this subject than the average joe. We are skeptical just because of the behavior just as anyone could be. Of the millions of depressed individuals out there, very few want to draw attention continually to their condition....

Maybe more of them should so that they could be helped, or others made more aware of the condition(s).

I agree with this but the truly depressed individuals rarely open up, deny or hide it regardless of who is talking about it.
