The USGA and R&A; plan to try to "significantly simplify" the Rules of Golf. They hope to release the simplified rules around 2018.

I haven't heard that, and I work with the West Penn Golf Association, rate courses, consider myself fairly "up on the news," etc.

The only real reference after searching is this one :

The USGA’s director of regional affairs for the Central Region also said the USGA and the R&A; are working on simplifying and standardizing the Rules of Golf. There could be uniformity between the situations that call for a ball to be dropped and those that require it to be placed. Same for the differences between getting one or two club lengths. By 2018, he said, the Rules of Golf book could be half its present size.

If so, cool - I just don't see that making the book half as thick.

It certainly won't be by 2016 (the next revision) and 2018 is not a revision year (as has already been pointed out). 2020 at best.

Tom O'Tool said in an interview this morning that they would not be ready by 2016 so he expects to do it between their regularly scheduled releases -- "probably around 2018". He spoke on Sirius radio golf.

There is a replay of the interview available at Siriusxm PGA Tour. It was on Fairways of Life this morning.

It's been a long time since they published any rule changes between the normal revision dates, so I'll believe it when I see something official.  The Decisions are on a 2 years schedule, but the rules have been on a 4 year schedule since before 1980.  I don't see this as sufficiently urgent that it would be necessary to change the schedule for it.

I didn't hear 2018. I only heard 'towards the end of the revision cycle'. He didn't specify which cycle 2012-2015 or 2016-2019. But most of the work for end 2015 has already been done.

Sure, they'll just use a smaller font and mess with the margins, just like we all did in college!

And the extra thin paper that they use to make smaller bibles.

I'm on board, it is our Bible after all. And like the other bible, some people follow it more closely than others, haha.
