For better or worse, I want to have a driver in my hand on 18. Just a personal preference. So I would be opposed to a par 3 finishing hole. I have no problem whatsoever with a par 3 9th hole

I think the finishing hole should require a driver to be used one last time, the finishing hole at my home course is a par 5 that is reachable in 2 but has plenty of trouble if that 2nd shot is off line so it can yield a birdie if you pull off a couple good shots or it could ruin a good round if you either lose a ball or go OB on a relatively easy hole to make par on which makes you decide to either play safe and take the par or go for it and risk it all.

One of my favorite courses, The Experience at Koele on Lanai, finishes on one of my favorite 3-pars. Its a 7-9i shot that must hit the green, which is narrow, terraced, and protected by water and bunkers. I don't like finishing on a humdrum 3-par (see Klipper Course at Marine Base Kaneohe Bay, which is otherwise a fantastic course), but a great 3-par can provide real drama for a finish.

Once course I used to play on a regular basis had a par 3 9th and 18th, both water holes. The 9th was about 135 from the whites but 210 from the blues (fortunately I play the whites).  The 18th is 175 from the whites and 195 from the blues with water everywhere and a par or bogey is a very good score for my ability.  I do not mind the 18th as a par 3, but it has to be tough.  If I had my choice I like a tough par 5 where everyone has to reach back and go for it after playing 17 holes.

I've always been a fan of the monster par 5 finisher. Two courses I play have 600 yard par 5 holes at the last. One has a lake in the layup area so you either have to hit a great fairway wood second shot to clear the water to get a wedge in your hands for the third shot or lay up short of the lake and have 165+ left into the green.

Not sure I've even seen a par 3 18th.

How about #9 and #18 as par 3 holes?

That what you get at Metal of Honor golf course on Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA.

No. 9 (169 yds. from Blue) crosses a pond to the green in a small amphitheater with up slopes on the sides and back. Club selection is the main challenge.

No. 18 (170 yds. from Blue) comes off an elevated tee, and the green is on a little plateau that falls off to the left and back... definitely the more interesting of the two.

For details, see: http://clubsg.skygolf.com/courses/scorecard.php?id=16103

Another famous No. 9 Par 3 is at Merion Golf Club (site of 2013 US Open, and other prior opens). Measuring over 200 yards, it has a creek in front of the green, and is surrounded by bunkers.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
