I have never been more frustrated than I am right now!  So, after four years and tens of thousands of dollars on my golf game I am now just another mid 90's player somehow!

I was able to get my handicap down into the 9s last year!  Granted, I was working on swing changes because of Evolvr which can derail a game some because of the change, but I felt like I was making decent progress!

Fast forward to now and I come out at the beginning of this year and my brain and body feels like it's never played golf EVER!  No feeling no distance control on my pitches/chips.  I can hit long drives etc, but my irons are inconsistent at best!

I even looked a little more at my equipment and found that part of the issues I was having with gripping my clubs too tight and always pulling my short irons had to do with grips being too thin.  What do I do?  I change my grips to those new decade medium sized golf pride grips last week!  Well I come out at the driving range last week and proceed to have the best practices I have ever had!  I'm consistently making perfect contact and not squeezing the clubs super tight.  I'm not hitting pull hooks etc..  I felt incredible.

So I visit the Driving Range on Friday night and same thing perfect swing and feel etc. again.  Next morning is my round.  I get on the driving range to hopefully regrove everything and boom TERRIBLE!  No feel!  NOTHING!  It's like I've never been!

What's worse!  I proceed to get this weird loopty looo in the top of my back swing which caused me to top half my shots!  Even when I find out that I'm doing it and shorten my practice swings to make it stop I get over the ball consiouse that I'm doing it and trying not to do it, but STILL keep doing it!

I'm so discusted with my game right now I don't know that I want to waste the money to keep playing....It's the most frustrating thing I've gone through so far!  Hell!  I just got game golf about two months ago and have around 10 rounds in and am now a 15.9 handicap!  This is pathetic for me!!!!

Does anyone have any sort of advice on gaining back that comfortable feeling?  If I can't I seriously can't see myself continuing!  I set my goal this year of finally shooting a 79 somewhere and it's not going to happing like this!

BTW....here is my game golf profile for anyone who is interested...

I think that's the curse of golfing in the North East.  It takes me a month or two to start scoring again every year.

My only advice is to remember the big picture: "I am here with the sun shining, I'm surrounded by friends and family, tonight I will eat good food, drink good wine, smoke a good cigar and make love to my beautiful wife. It's a good life, no?"  - miguel angel jimenez

Just try not to stress over it.

Oh, and you've gotta link to your profile, not "my rounds."  That your link just sends me to my rounds.

God!!!!  It's so frustrating!  So I went to the driving range after work, and started really screwing with my swing to start feeling changes and what could have gone wrong on Saturday.  Well....I figured it out and it is STUPID!  So, my normal grip with a thin golf grip basically wound up with a mostly neutral to weak left hand and a weak right hand with a HIGH trigger finger that separates from my right hand a bunch.  Well with the new thick grips I start gripping the club a lot easier which would have been a good thing but I stopped putting my trigger finger further down the club like I did before.  This led to my wrist not setting early and being too loose which cause that weird loopty loo in the top of my backswing and ruined my round on Saturday!  This is why golf is so frustrating!  Now I have to wait until at least Friday to right the ship.... Ugh!!!

Matt,

Been there and done that myself.   My suggestion is relax and enjoy the experience.  It's not all about improving, and getting to certain HI.

Sound advice but difficult for most to follow, especially those of us here on TST who are constantly striving to lower their scores and handicap.   We all experience setbacks and frustrating rounds, the key is to accept they will happen and make sure they are the exception and not the rule.

So, a little update.

Essentially, the horrible rounds I was having were the best thing to happen to my game.  After videoing the swings and going back through my old lessons tightening everything back up.......

I just shot my best round ever and first round in the 70s!  A 79 to be exact.  I was also EVEN on the front nine!  Here is my game golf link again....

Super excited about it too!!!

Glad you sorted it mate. Everytime i have a bad round at the range with a certain club, i deliberately try and keep hitting shots with the same club and end up going home with back and wrist pain. Best to take a week off and go back with a clear head

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
