I've been Playing Golf for: 3 years

My current handicap index or average score is: 10

My typical ball flight is: draw

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: fade/slice, push fade/slice

I've been hitting slight draws with the driver and all irons with good distance. For the past week or so i've noticed that ive got this nasty borderline fade/slice and it sometimes is a push fade/slice. I have no idea what Im doing different my swing feels the same but im losing distance and i am not making as good of contact as I was before. I feel like I'm not quite squaring the club face through impact and I'm looking for any swing tips i can get. I've tried strengthening my grip but it really didn't help much which didn't make sense to me. I was at the range today and moved the ball up with my short irons farther towards the front foot and noticed i had my normal ball flight back. I can't do this with every club obviously because I play my hybrids close to my front food anyway. I'm just gotten so frustrated lately and I feel like i've tried everything to fix it. I just graduated college and I'm in a transition period before I start Graduate school and I really don't have the money to spend on golf lessons at the moment. Almost all of my misses before this came up were pulled shots with a nice draw with good distance. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Please take some new videos with a golf ball in there. Swings without golf balls are rarely similar to ones with a golf ball.

Also be careful about your video angles. DTL version seems to be off a little.

I started playing golf around 3 years ago. I really got hooked and started becoming a student of the game you could say. Im around a 10 handicap at the moment and up until recently my golf game has been great. I've been hitting slight draws with the driver and all irons with good distance. @lawsonjc please don't start a new swing thread when you post new videos. Just keep posting to the one you have, thanks.

I'm probably not the best person to be giving advice, but it seems like you flip the club at impact rather than rotating the forearms. This will definitely make you lose distance and give you a higher ball flight.  I've been struggling with the same issue lately as its a tough habit to break.

Welcome to this site!

So, I was trying to figure out what you were suggesting?

This is more or less what I see, is this really flipping too much? Is it possibly better to "lag" a little bit more rather than adding another motion like rotation?

I don't think you are getting full extension after impact. If you hold your club toward the target with your left arm only and then rotate your body so you can also grab the club with your right that will probably give you a decent idea of where you want to be after impact. You'll also notice that you won't be able to grab the club with your right hand unless you rotate.

Makes sense.

I think something else is going on that bunches you up (see image below). It looks as if your upper body has stopped rotating, so your left arm has to bend early. Not sure why - are you actively trying to stop from pulling the ball?

Thanks for the welcome! I guess i was referring to what happens after impact.

The forearm is underneath the club rather than turned. My follow through was (probably still is) almost identical to his and I have always struggled with a higher ball flight

I actually don't think that's the issue. Look at Zach Johnson in the same position. You don't need to rotate your hands.

I think it has to do with the rotation of the upper body. If you look both at Tiger's and Zach's upper body, it kept rotating. The OPs upper body looks like it stopped rotating. My 2 cents :)

There's a video for Key#2 somewhere on the site called "Follow Through Turning Rates". I can't find it right now, but you should watch it. Addresses (at least one) of your issues I think. Anyone know where that video or thread is?

Hi @lawsonjc , the issue with the fade/slice is a result of going "shallow to steep". The steepness of the shaft on the downswing causes you uncock your wrists at too fast a rate in order to try and shallow things out. First thing I would do is look at your grip and make sure the left hand grip lies more in the fingers and that the heel pad is more "on top". Grip looks weak and palmy to me and that can certainly contribute to the backswing pic on the left.

Thanks so much for the tips guys! I worked on it today at the range but I didn't have anybody there to video me. I worked on really getting my hips through the ball and I had very few pushes. I think my Hip turn was actually pushing to the right of my target line instead of straight through if that makes sense. As for my grip I made sure it was more in the fingers. I still haven't gotten rid of my fade but I have my distance back. I'm back to compressing the golf ball and hearing it hiss through the air with that penetrating ball flight. I'm fading the ball around 10 yards so its definitely manageable.

Quick question, have you been strengthening your grip in hopes of getting rid of the slice/more fade spin than you want shots? I used to always do that and now my grip is as weak as it has even been and I am very very rarely slicing the ball (other swing changes helped as well).

Posted
In my experiance I was much better served tweaking my swing with a pro. That same pro also weakened my grip considerably and I have been striking the ball pretty consistently. I think strengthening a grip that's already strong is just a band aid in a way (I did the same).I would never consider using the grip I use now when I was slicing, but now the majority of my shots are draws and I don't really need to worrying about slicing.

    • Although the base rules don't make this really clear, the Player must have decided to use Unplayable Ball relief before lifting the ball.  This exact situation is discussed in the Committee Procedures section of the Rules, section 6C(8).  Section 6C addresses how to rule when a Player proceeds under a Rule that does not apply.  Note that 9.4 applies, 9.4 deals with a player moving his ball when no rule allows it.   Rule 9.4 penalizes the Player for lifting his ball when not permitted by the Rules, and requires him to replace it.  Since he dropped and played from a different place, the Wrong Place penalty applies.  As for a serious breach, that would only apply if the Wrong Place gave him a really significant advantage.  Since he could have taken Unplayable Ball relief in essentially the same spot, for just 1 penalty stroke, the Wrong Place penalty of 2 strokes is enough "punishment", there's no need to consider a DQ.
