Quote:

The PGA Tour has announced that Scott Stallings has been suspended three months for violating the Anti-Doping Policy.

”Mr. Stallings self-reported this information after discovering that a supplement that he was taking was on the prohibited list,” the tour said through a press release. “He has acknowledged his inadvertent error and accepted his suspension.”

Ranked No. 154 in the world, Stallings, a three-time PGA Tour winner, had made 11 cuts in 19 appearances this season.

Self-reported. Bobby Jones would be proud.

I am glad that he turned himself in, instead of hiding it.

Still, how much time does it take to make a phone call before taking something? I am sure that he could have called up someone at the PGA and asked about the supplement.

“I did so on the recommendation of my physician due to chronic fatigue I had felt over a period of time -- not in any way for performance enhancement" I think it is great and all that he reported it himself. But the above to me puzzling.. So he is taking a supplement for fatigue and somehow he thinks it is not performing enhancing? Isn't it making you feel better and less fatigued? That in its self IMO would enhance your performance wouldn't it? Good for him for coming out and admitting it though, he could have easily just not said anything, and gotten away with it..

??? Eating food is performance enhancing too. So is drinking water. My doctor told me that exercise is good for me ... Should I check with the tour to see if that's on the banned list simply because it's good for me?

Scott's a big guy, but he appears to have added bulk to his upper body this past winter/spring.

Wonder if he's using other substance's as well?

So, you are comparing supplements with food, water and exercise? Those all sound the same to you?

There's a long list of "supplements" that are banned as performance enhancing. It would be very easy to take something on the recommendation of a nutritionist or doctor and not suspect anything if he/she recommended it. I'm pretty sure Jim Furyk's 5-Hour Energy bottle isn't on the banned supplement list, but he was on TV for years crowing about how it enhanced his performance. The words themselves aren't the mitigating factor. That he voluntarily turned himself in shows class.

I am not arguing what his intention was..

I don't know what he looked like before, but what they don't mention in the article is after he came out and admitted that he took these supplements did the PGA test him for anything else?

Also, the PGA needs to probably go back and take a look at their testing policy, because basically this guy is coming out and saying "Yeah, I took x during this period" and the PGA says "Hey, thanks you are suspended".. but shouldn't the question be where was the PGA during that time period? Sleeping?  If he was tested, did this come up on the tests?  If not then the testing its self would be considered a failure wouldn't it?  Maybe we will hear more, maybe not..

If the PGA isn't thinking along those lines though then I think something is wrong.

I don't think the PGA Tour can test for everything on the banned substance list.

I need to get some DHEA ...

As to Stallings, if that is the only way to recover, what should he do?

Sleeping 16 hr/day and not having energy is not normal.

I know certain exercise will increase testosterone...

On topic, 90 days seems a long time for self-reporting if he's been off the substance and passed the drug test. He should have checked. Perhaps the condition was so bad that he feared checking -- he wanted to get better.

At the same time, he should have checked and looked for alternatives to recovery.

5 hour energy would be on the banned list in other sports. Caffeine is stimulant. It's not banned in Golf per se but in cycling it is at certain levels. When I used to race, we would drink flat coca cola near the end of a long race to boost energy. I don't think they can even do that now. I'm glad he reported it. But these athletes really should check first to make sure.

No ... you did that.  You said that what you found puzzling was that he took something that was good for him on the advice of his doctor.  You said that since it made him feel better he must have known it was performance enhancing.  I'm saying that you're way oversimplifying that because food, water and exercise would also help somebody who was fatigued feel better.  You weren't arguing that it was bad because it was a supplement, you were saying it was bad (pr puzzling) because it helped him.

Third suspension for PEDs the Tour has handed down since 2008. I wonder who the other two were?

IIRC, it was two journeymen scrubs. Doug Barron and Bhavik Patel.

I don't remember anywhere in my post where I said he should have known that they are PEDs.. Can you quote where I said that? I have since changed my opinion because I thought he said something else.. Basically he was saying that his intention of taking it was not for performance enhancement and I must have read it quickly and understood something else..

You are kidding, right??  That's like, literally, EXACTLY what you said.

No, I'm not kidding you.. Because I was talking in terms of after the fact where he realized it is on the prohibited items.. Again, because I thought what he was saying is that it is not performance enhancing.. I already said I misunderstood him, what more do you want?

What more do I want?  I don't want anything other than for you not to snarkily misrepresent what you originally said and what I was responding to.  That's great that you admitted you misunderstood him after the fact, but you absolutely said what I thought you said originally so you can cut the "show me where I said that" crap.

And I call complete bullshit on the "after the fact" stuff too.  You were not talking about that because you wrote everything in the present tense.

So he is taking a supplement for fatigue and somehow he thinks it is not performing enhancing?

That's present tense, as in you expected him to know then, not "after the fact."  Otherwise you'd have said "So he took a supplement for fatigue that helped him, then found out it was banned, and still thinks it wasn't performance enhancing?"
