Yeah I agree...if Spieth had won The Open I would've pulled for him as is like to have seen all 4 majors in a row won by him...but once I was sure he'd get the #1 rank I was pulling for Day because he was due for a major. I don't think the Ryder Capt. Is a very significant position, but I do know that I don't want Davis Love (refuse to use his silly III suffix) doing it. He's a boring, silver spooner who had his chance and failed.

Have you read the book "How to win friends and influence people"? -apparently you have not The Olympics and Ryder Cup have so many dynamics that make them different. - Ryder Cup participants have close friends on tour from multiple countries. Many of these same players might be on oposing teams during this exhibition. The counties competing against each other are strong allies and the players know each other. In many cases they are close friends. To me the Ryder Cup is simply for bragging rights b/w two groups of individuals to which field may be slightly better at a given time. I cannot view it as a patriotic event no matter how many insults you throw at others on this thread. You could take a laxative...it might make you feel better.

I agree the Ryder Cup isn't as competitive as the Olympics but I still think more people pull for their country during it than during a regular tournament.

Even though it's an exhibition there's a certain amount of country pride in winning it.  If it was just for bragging rights I doubt the players on the US side would have been as frustrated with Watson as they were.   Try telling Poulter that it's just an exhibition, I doubt he would agree with you.

Most of my response was defending several members that were being called unpatriotic. I thought about mentioning Ian Poulter. He along with Colin Montgomery are the only two players in recent memory that seem to take Ryder Cup seriously. I think a lot of that has do to do with the fact that they can't win a major. From old footage I have seen, Seve may have taken it seriously too. One thing that would be difficult to discern is a PGA players competitive drive in general. For the top players in the world you would you would have to be highly competitive to reach that level. I can understand how some people will look at it from a patriotic standpoint. I just don't. When the Olympics come around I'll root hard for Jordan and Bubba. However, until the Olympics I'm still pulling for Rory, Day, Stenson, Harrington, Retief, Cabrera, etc.

I don't care who you root for, I just think there's more patriotism involved in the Ryder Cup and Presidents than you're acknowledging.  I will root for Rory and Day during regular tournaments but not during the Ryder or Presidents Cup.

Some people take sporting events far too seriously.  Others are rational enough not to attach such "importance" to grown men playing games.

I get a chuckle out of people who fanatically root for their home NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL/etc. team.  For the most part, these men don't come from your city - hell, many of them aren't even from your country .  They're getting paid a lot of money to play a game and that team signed them, so that's where they are until the next best offer comes around.  They're essentially mercenaries, going wherever the money takes them.  The owner of that team gives a crap about your city to the extent that he can make lots and lots of money from marketing his team there...beyond that, he couldn't care less.  If he thinks he can make more money elsewhere, you can bet he'll leave your city behind in a heartbeat and not lose a wink of sleep over it.

As far as I'm concerned, root for whoever you please in the Ryder Cup, I'll not call you un-patriotic.  It's just golf.  It's just a game.  This isn't a matter of national security or supremacy or anything so important.  It's grown men in funny clothes hitting a little white ball around a field with oddly shaped sticks.  The outcome means nothing to anybody except those who have attached far too much importance to it in their own minds.  If Team Europe beats Team USA, it means nothing about the respective countries.  It just means that a few men from a few countries in Europe played golf a little better than a few men in the USA for a few days. 99% of the people in the involved countries will have no idea that the event even took place.

you are drawing an equivalence between war and a game.... i think you need a healthy dose of perspective... one of my uncle's didn't get zapped with agent orange (and die shortly thereafter) so that i could care about a stupid golf exhibition... 3 other uncles served, one attended the usma, and my father attended the usna... both of my grandfathers served... it is a FREAKING GAME....
