I seriously dislike this trend of every top athlete releasing their own logo. I know it's mostly their managers and agents trying to squeeze every dollar they can out of their athletes but I can't help thinking of the athlete as terribly vain; especially when they're cashing in this early in the career.

The first thing I thought when I saw this is that it looks like the FootJoy logo to me...not sure if that's what UA is going for.

Agree that they need to make it look a little more modern/edgy.

I don't like that at all. The S looks worse, the Js look even less like Js, and why are there sharp pointy things? Is he a member of a teen pop cover band that remakes KISS songs?

I don't think the "J"s stand out very much in the original logo, but the "S" does. Also, I think the "J" is the cross piece with the swooping down part, because if it was the other way the "J" is backward.

If you told me the original logo had a "J" and an "S" and a "G" in it, I could "see" that. But his middle name is Alexander.

I disagree. It has nothing to do with "vanity." It's about branding for these companies. Cashing in early? How many golfers or any other athlete have won 2 Super Bowls (in essence) before 22 years of age? The life of an athlete is short. They have to maximize their earning potential. It's pure marketing and common sense.

I agree, I prefer the original as well.  I am also in marketing and branding and believe that logo's like Jordan's and Footjoy stand the test of time while other flashier ones don't age as gracefully.

To make money you have to have a brand, many successful athletes in sports has a brand, Jordan, Bryant, Anthony, LeBron, Tiger, Poulter, Norman, Hogan, Nicklaus, etc.  Branding is what builds wealth for them when they are no longer able to play their sport at a high level.   Jordan is smart to cash in early while his name is in the press and he's getting all the media attention, what reason would there be to wait?

No, simplicity does.  Color palettes and fonts change over time.  A classic logo withstands the test of time.

personally, i never begrudge anyone making money... early or late in their career... make bank when you can make bank, because you never know what is going to happen tomorrow... did anyone think that when tiger limped off the 91st hole of the 2008 us open that we would be sitting here today wondering (with very good reason) if that was the last major we would see him win? did anyone think david duval would go from terminator to "gone from the golf world" in such a short period of time? etc. as far as the logos go... < cue michael corleone > its nothing vain sonny.. its strictly busines... < end michael >

Your response of what are the spikey things was not worth my time.  Look at any modern style font, and there they are.  Think Michigan State.  Not KISS.


Your response proved you do no get modern design so there was no need to defend it.

And a logo isn't a font at all.  Maybe you meant typeface?? But it's not a typeface either.  It's a custom creation for just that logo.

I'm glad I don't work in your marketing/branding office.

      Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.

      I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.
