That's it, then. He's ranked 200 or lower in that stat; him missing fairways isn't the problem, but how badly. If he can get it to like, say 30 feet or so, I think that's when we'll see him really turn it on.

I looked at this stat from 2008, when it seems they started recording it.

Total strokes in parantheses.

2008: 28' 10" (62) - 4 wins
2009: 27' 1" (228) - 6 wins
2010: 34' 1" (174) - 0 wins
2011: 31' 10" (135) - 0 wins
2012: 28' 6" (248) - 3 wins
2013: 30' 2" (208) - 5 wins
2014: 33' 1" (96) - 0 wins
2015: 42' 1" (113) - 0 wins

There are obviously lots of statistics that relate to number of wins, but it's interesting to see that he's farther into the woods in 2014.

Being closer to the green, but in the rough can often be advantageous, but not when you get too far from the fairway and into treelines.

I think, by using this stat, we can say with confidence that the driver woes appear to be an aberration. If he was 30 feet away only two years ago, then he should bounce back closer to that number.

there does seem to be a correlation between winning and proximity there... all of his "best years", he wins, all his "worst", he doesn't win... and when he was REALLY tiger, he was just amazingly long and straight... i bet the proximity in 2000-2002 was insane... some causation as well, as you note... longer (as long as it is reasonably in play) has been pretty well proven on this forum over and over to be a good thing... plus when you aren't as far into the wilderness, you tend not to make doubles (or even worse, others)... one thing that is definitely different about "winning tiger" and "not-winning tiger" is that "winning tiger" never seemed to make worse than bogey, and "not winning tiger" seems to make his share of doubles/others...

It used to be I would watch Phil half waiting for a train wreck to happen.

Now sadly it seem that mantle has passed to Tiger.
