What'd You Shoot Today?

Recommended Posts

Brookside Course 1 Blues: 88 (45/43)

Here it is at the start of month 2 with a weekday pass.

I have no idea how I shot under 90 today. Even though I'm finally starting to get that whipping feeling at impact with my irons. No with the woods and hybrids yet. I kept slicing my driver, thinned a lot of shots, hit into the trees a lot and used both sides of the fairway way too much.

3 doubles, 10 bogey, 5 pars. The best hole was a bogey save with a drive sliced over two fairways onto the green. Hit a hybrid to the edge of the fairway, then chipped on with a punch shot, and made a 25 foot putt. My best drive was 245 yards onto the fairway. I was slicing my driver too much, so I used my 3i and 3H and got 11 FW, 3 GIR, bunch of nGIR, 31 putts (my best ever).

Played so much crappier than yesterday, but still scored reasonably well. My differential is dropping.

Brookside Couse 1 Blues: 89 (43/46)

1 double, 15 bogey, 2 pars, 12 FW, 4 GIR, 37 putts (the greens were really dried out they acted really funny). Longest Drive 247, shortest drive with a 3i was 190.

So, I tried to use my 3W on the long drives and irons and hybrid off all the shorter holes. I thought I could shoot better by being on the fairway more, and realized that I always had between 20-100 yards left on all my par 4. I did use driver/3H/60 wedge on a par 5 for a GIR. I thinned the 3H, but the flight was this low long running trajectory and it went close to 220 yards. My drive was also about 247 yards (give or take the GPS accuracy). I only had 60 yards to go with my lob wedge.

It seems like I'm stuck until I get my ball striking to the next level. My irons are usable, but I would like more consistency and distance from them. I think they need to be lengthened about an inch or so to fit me so I stop thinning them.

Nice relaxing round with my wife this afternoon and shot a 72 (par 71 unrated course).

Keep in mind that I give our course a 65 course rating so...

My problems today were being slightly long on short game shots and slightly short on putts.

Made 2 birdies and 3 bogeys.

Shot a 45 in the last  league match of the season.

We were all square til the last hole when both my partner and put our approach shots in the water.  #18 at Needwood is a pain in the ass.  I think I average double bogey on it.  I hit a decent drive today, but I still had 180 to the hole and had to carry a pond with a slight down hill lie.  So I skulled my 3 hybrid into the drink.

One of our opponents hit a good drive, a terrific approach shot and made about an 8 foot putt for birdie.  Oh well, it was a good match and a good season.

Brookside Course 2 Blues (69.1/122): 85 (44/41), Though the score does not reflect it my ball striking was surprisingly good today (for a bogey golfer) when I keep my elbows together. Thanks, Erik and Mike.

1 double (due to 3 putting), 13 bogeys (many of which were less than a foot missed putt), 9/14 (fairways, because of slices and pulls, some were fades that came back too), 5/18 GIR (28% pretty nice, huh?), 36 putts (ouch).

Almost lost a ball when "money was on the line", then one of my fellow competitors found my ball about 8 feet from my potential drop. 200 yards away and I almost made GIR with a 3H 10 yards shy and right. Scrambled for a par.

Just starting to get the feel of what being a 14 HI is like (woo-hoo).

Front nine was absolutely terrible...  Missed most fairways, and the ones I hit I missed the greens lol.  Hit way more greens on the back nine though... Coincidentally scored much more appropriately on the back.

My last few rounds have been interesting....I carded a 77 last weekend that should have been closer to 72 had it not been for an ICE COLD PUTTER!!

All rounds were played at Stone Canyon: 73.2CR 141slope........

I followed that with an 88..........I had 6 penalties...don't even ask!!  Lets just say there are many opportunities for penalties where I play...LOL

I followed that up with a nice 38-38=76

I only hit 6/13 fairways, but drove the ball well in spite of 1 penalty. The penalty was caused by excessive run-out...... my ball is normally safe on the line I hit it on 9/10 times, but the ball kept rolling and rolling!!!!! The fairways played firm and fast and several drives just barely ran off......but one just barely went too far into oblivion!!

GIR..........10

Putts........31........the putter was still cold.  I didn't hole ANYTHING!!!

I could have scored near level par on this day, but the putter wasn't cooperating.  I still have it in me to post a level par round in 2014, but it just isn't meant to be so far.   The year isn't over yet.... my current low round this year is 74 on this track.   (71 last year)  My experimentation with ball position and ball flight screwed me up and I need to learn well enough to leave things alone.

Horrible, and didn't have my phone anyway to record it. Lot's of bogey and doubles from really bad putting. Missed a bunch of 3 footers. Still sore from last nights "I'll hit with high school students, and need to try to hit as far. . ." Learned my lesson. At the first tee box my shoulders felt like rubber. Could barely lift my arms. When I reached into my pocket to score, I didn't have my phone. By default it was a practice round. What I remember is a lot of scrambling and missed putts. Mostly missed putts. Parred my last hole by some miracle.

91 last night. Tweaked my knee on 10, and it messed me up on a lot of shots...unfortunate, since I still scrambled and managed 5 pars on the back 9...but still shot a 47.

Shot another 73. Par 71 that I give a 65 course rating. Only one birdie.

Hit the ball fairly well but had a little trouble with distance control on a few shots that cost me.

Forgot my GPS and was guessing a little on a few shots from out of the fairway.

76 on par 71. No birdies. :bugout: Could have been much worse because I made 4 putts of around 10 feet for pars. Having trouble with short shots around the green rolling out about 10 feet farther than I expect them to. That's becoming a pattern and I can only hope to bail myself out with a putter so often. Very, very windy and fairly cold (for this time of year) so with a lack of anything else to blame it on I'll go with that. ;-)

101. Solid off tee with only lost ball coming off a hybrid tee shot. Driver shot is a a fade that I can count on... problem is if the hole is a dog left I still fade. Really need to up my approach and chips to get in 90s reliably.

leaves are AWFUL on the mountain courses around here - it's about time to quit scoring - I literally lost a half dozen balls on good shots that would have been in the fairway (or very close to it).    Greens are ridiculous - I would need to carry a 2 ft wide broom to clear the leaves to form a path to putt through.      It's time to start using shag balls and it's still golf after all, but serious scoring days are over for the year ...

I don't normally play on weekends, but the opportunity presented itself yesterday. An old college buddy drop in for a visit, and wanted to go play some golf.

A good thing. I finally broke the 80 mark with a legitimate 78 (40/38). This has been my goal for the past 6 months. Of course I have to give my buddy some credit since he shot a 74 (39/35). Chasing him kept me sharp I have to believe. 29 putts, and no penalties helped out. I also had a couple of nice recovery shots for par. I recorded two birds, to help my 8 bogies look more respectable.

The irony was that it was 5.5 hour round. I don't normally play on weekends because of this issue. The course was packed as we had a mid morning tee time. Another factor was our extended stay at the black jack table the night before. Free drinks sometimes make the next morning awful. Luckily the young lady driving the beverage cart came to our rescue through out our round.

We split our skins match at $90 a piece.  We'll have to flip a coin for dinner tonight. Probably some more table games after that.  Just glad the proverbial monkey is off my back.

Sunday,

Cliffside Golf Course, Tipp City, OH

55-XX-XXX

I played like crap, but really this course should have been closed. The place was rammed full of leaves. Leaves in the rough. Leaves on the fairway. Leaves on the green. I lost no less than eight balls. Under all those leaves was a brownish-green concrete that served as a ball trampoline. After losing another tee shot on no. 10, I hit a PW to the front edge of a relatively large green that sloped back to front. The thing bounced like it hit a cart path, rolled up the slope and off the green. The darned thing must of traveled 30 yards after hitting the floor. The scorecard was retired at that point.

It had been awhile since my last visit here. The course is a bit quirky and, being a family-owned course, I want to support it. Course conditions like that make it pretty difficult.

Out for 9 yesterday. Shot 44 with a 9 on #9 (par 4). Kind of funny and really just bad decision making. I blasted my first shot through the fairway on a 390 dogleg right. It carried the cart path bounced hard and made it to the yards (ob) on the left side. The hole plays uphill and I don't usually get it that far, it's about a 260-270 carry uphill to where it hit first so I figured it can't happen again. But I was killing it all day and same thing, through the fairway into the yards but this time it hit a white post and bounced back into play landing in deep rough and behind a tree. Not sure what was special about yesterday, it's been a week since I had touched a club but my distance was longer with every club. I hit through every dogleg. On this hole I was trying to hit a little fade, not my natural shape but both times pretty straight but straight left. You can guess what happened from there, nothing good that's for sure.

Dave :-)

Pulled the lead hand index finger flexor, so I'm playing really "soft" golf starting Sunday. This why I did not post any scores. I will say that by swinging so softly, I had only one triple in 27 holes. 1 birdie, 17 bogey (bad short game), 8 par. No doubles. I wonder if this means I should play "soft" all the time?

    • Day 316 - More swings, full backswing and full finish.
    • Day 132: did some mirror work while watching TV. Worked on backswing stuff primarily.
    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
