Shot 85 71.9/139 today. Should have shot an 80 or maybe even better. Played some dumb shots (club selection) today that I wish I could take back. Struck the ball well but also had a few bad holes. Finished Doube, par, double to close things out.

About half an hour before I had to leave for my tee time today, I got the FT-3 (Tour, 9.5, Neutral, UST ProForce V2 65 Stiff, GP New Decade Multicomp grip) I've been waiting for from Callaway. Took it along with the Scotty Cameron American Classics III (the Bullseye) putter to work on my putting. I've not been hitting the sweet spot on my putter, so I figured I'd try to force myself today with that putter.

Ooops. The latter was a mistake. The former, I dunno.

At any rate, I broke par for the first time in a decade today at my home course. Shot a 71. Granted, seven of those 10 years I was living in Ohio or Florida (college, etc.) but still... great round today.

The suck of it was... my two bogeys were both three-putts. One was from the fringe (by a few inches, if that). I mis-hit the putts (long, 40+ foot ones) and they stayed seven feet short, then I missed those.

I hit 12 greens, including the last seven. Of the six greens I missed, five of them were by a combined total of about four feet (three just in the fringe, one just in the rough). On the 8th hole, a short par 4, I completely duffed my tee shot off the heel of my 3W. I hit down the fairway with a 5-iron (I didn't even reach the fairway). I hit a sand wedge to six feet and made the putt to save par. That's the only "bad" hole I had.

I hit a whopping four fairways with the FT-3, but most of my misses were by a few inches or feet. Only three drives didn't have a chance to stay in the fairway, and they were all within the first six holes while I was still getting the feel.

I didn't warm up prior to the round.

I made three birdies, all relatively short putts: 7, 10, and 10 feet.

I had only 29 putts because, again, five of my putts were from the fringe but don't count as putts. So really, you could almost say I had a 71 with 34 putts. Ouch!!!

But anyway, here's more detail than anyone but me cares to see:

Shot 80 today. 37/43. Disappointed though I thought I was going to have a great round and then all of a sudden the wheels come off. I dont warm up before I play, I just get there and hit a few putts, stretch for about 15 minutes and then get out there. And I almost always have a better front then back, I dont know why.

Mentally, Im thinking of how not to mess things up instead of how to make birdies. I cant explain it. In any event that was my day. I could have such better scores If i got this in check.

I've been battling a flu bug since Sunday night, but still played in my league on Wednesday. I was soild, but not spectacular. I was 3 over for the first 6 holes until putting my tee shot in the water on number seven. Of course I felt the need to follow a bad shot with a dumb shot and chunked number three into the drink as well. Talk about flu-like symptoms. The tripple made me a little nauseaus.
I then proceeded to pull my tee shot on the next into the tall stuff. After taking an unplayable I pushed my wedge right of the green. Where it landed was blind so I hit a provisional in case it was in the marsh. My provisional landed 15 feet from the cup. So now I'm putting from 15 for double if I don't find my other ball. As I'm about to give up the search I find it leaning against the valve on the sprinkler system. I take my relief and almost hole out for par before tapping in for bogey.
Par on the last for a +7. Beat my opponent by 6 shots actual and 5 net. My wife won her 6th match of the year, by 1 net after giving the lady 12 shots, to remain undefeated (6-0). I am a paltry 5-1.

Followed my 71 with an 80, which actually wasn't as bad as I was thinking it would be. They say your great rounds are always followed by disasters, right? I avoided the disaster, thankfully.

I just went out for my 3rd round of golf ever yesterday. Slope of 129, 6700 total yards, a par 71 course where 15 of the 18 holes have major water hazards, and I scored a 108. I am improving substantially since I started playing last month :).

120 (With about a dozen mulligans)
118 (no mulligans)
108 (no mulligans)

Shot 86 today. Five off my personal best of 81 last week, but today's round included a snowman on the par 4 third hole. I could hear the door slamming on any kind of great round, but damn if I didn't immediately rally and shoot even par for the rest of the front nine including back-to-back birdies on four and five. I've never had back-to-back birdies in my life.

A more predictable back nine of 45 included four double boagies. I actually consider this a positive. If I can shoot in the mid-eighties posting snowmen and four DBs, I'm going to be fine once I eliminate the sheer stupidity from my game.

But the latest handicap revision dropped mine from 19 to 16.4, so things are getting better.

Shot a 76 today at a very difficult course. It was only 3 off the course record. I had a triple to start the second nine and never really recovered... oh well.

Shot a 95 on Saturday (70.5/133). The round started off so promising -- +3 through six holes! Then I stepped up to the seventh tee and proceeded to post three consecutive sevens. 44 on the front, 51 on the back.

I haven't broken 90 in two years, so I was guilty of thinking how this might be one of those 'special' rounds. Before I knew it, I was all over of the map. I should be happy I was <100.

I played alright today. I really couldn't control my driver, it was going all over the place. Luckily I was getting up and down like a bandit. I had a pretty good round going until I doubled the last hole to shoot 74.

First off, the Mickelson post was priceless.

Second, I played a quick 9 Sat. AM with my lovely wife. Her first time on a golf course this milennium. I shot a 42, but I only really focused on my game for a few holes. Mostly worked on keeping her from throwing a club or punching me in the face (or both). Went par-birdie-par-par on Nos. 3-6, but was sloppy the rest of the way.

The most important number of the day: 11. As in, it was our 11th anniversary. Pretty cool that she'd want to play golf (her idea).

played early sunday (7am tee time) on my home course and before I really woke up - I was +3 after 2 holes . At that time Dunkin Donut kicked in and I managed to bring a 39 home after the front (2 bogeys, 2 birdies on the remaining 7 holes). Back nine was a dream. I didn't manage my 29 from a week ago, but shot a solid 31 with 4 birdies and no bogeys, for a total of 70 (one under). Very happy with my new driver

Seven under 64. OK, that was part of a 4 man scramble. However, we did take first place out of 17 teams. I think I was responsible for the 9 birdies. We used other peoples balls on the two bogeys and the seven pars. ;)

Glad, that was priceless just like Don said. Heheh.

I guess I really don't belong in here because I haven't played in three weeks. :/

I had to comment on that post by Glad though.

Also, congrats Erik for breaking par, and congrats to the guy that shot 108 without any mulligans in his third time out. That's much better than your 120 with a dozen mulligans.

Reminds me of that USGA commercial where the guy says "If I par this hole, I'll tie Tiger Woods in the final round of the 2002 U.S. Open," to which his pal says "Tiger shot a 102?"

The commercial takes a sour note when the guy then says "Looks like I'll need my long iron for this next shot." Couldn't he have said 3-iron? Or 4-iron? Or something? Last time I checked, nobody has a single club labeled "long iron." Anyway, I shot a 77 today or so at an easy stupid track (Green Meadows). Stuck some wedges close, but really I'm working on my driver swing right now. My last drive of the day was dead like I want them, though, so I think I've got things nearly figured out. I struggle with taking the club back inside (i.e. on plane, but inside of "outside" if you know what I mean) and yet getting it up above my shoulder instead of flat. My body wants to go flat if I take the club back along the plane, and when I concentrate on getting it upright above my shoulder, my natural tendency is to take it back outside.

Shot a 71 at the home course today (par 70 - 6700 yards).

37-36-71
9 greens
8 fairways
28 putts

The greens I missed were not that bad. A few on the collar...in essence it was closer to 11 or 12 greens. I drove the ball OK and hit my irons well. I putted great though. A few of the up and downs that were not on the collar were 15-20 footers that rolled in. My new Cameron Circa 62 went to good use. I had a few other birdie putts that I stroked well, but just misread.

Proably the best round of the year for me. My misses were only slight and in the right spots. My putting saved me on more than a few holes as well.

Fairways and Greens.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
