so i have been golfing since around 10 years old. And my uncle is the person who introduced me to golf so any clubs I have ever golfed with are hand me downs from him. I currently have a set of ping irons that are out dated. Now that I'm 18 and have a full time job, and have played very well lately, I would like to buy my first set of new irons. This is where I need help, I don't know what preferences I like because I don't have much experience with a lot of the new irons. How do I find which brand irons are good for me? I'd like to stay in the $300-600 range

Two sets I have been looking at are the callaway x-series and Adams golf xtd both on sale for $400 at a local store with the hybrid included

How I choose a set is ignore the brand name and then go swing every set I can in my price range. Whichever feels best gets my hard earned $$$.

Hi Derek:

If you have a Golfsmith, Golf Galaxy or maybe even Dick's Sporting Goods store, you should be able to go in and test-drive the iron sets before deciding to buy.  Heck, you might stumble across a set you like better in the same price range.  Do your homework, make a good selection and make sure you 'buy once and cry once.'  Golf gear isn't cheap!

Fatherly advice: Buy the best quality you can afford.  Always worked for me.

Wait a month until Black Friday and get in on sales either through retailers or sites like CallawayGolfPreowned.com or TaylormadeGolfPreowned.com. In the meantime, go try as many irons as you can. Look at Golf Digest's Hot List from the past 3 or 4 years so you have an idea of what lines of clubs were big over that time. In any event, you're looking at Game Improvement clubs or Super Game Improvement clubs, depending on how athletic you are and how much you think you'll want to put into the game. Most likely, you'll be happy with a set of GI irons, like a Callaway X2 Hot or a Taylormade Speedblade

I have the xtd irons and the more I use them the more I like them. Check on eBay I was able to get them for $153 brand new. The biggest knock against them seems to be the look of the cross cavity design but I can tell you they performed as any other iron I demoed.

Hybrids- Cobra F8 19 *

I check the big stores, Golfsmith, Dicks, etc. and find the clubs I like. Then I go on Ebay and find those clubs. I happen to be lucky, I'm a standard fit for virtually every measurement. If you need a special shafts or lies it get a little harder. I also use graphite shafts so Ebay really helps with the price quite a bit. I have never been disappointed.

JMO, go to a golf store and find a quality used set.  I was at Golfsmith last week and saw several high quality used iron sets that would retail for $1000 and were on sale for around $600.  Some were obviously used a lot and some looked like they have barely been used.

Remembering back when I was your age I was broke so I would have looked hard for the best used set I could find. As you get older and have more income you can splurge and get that latest and greatest new set.

Brands wise, everyone is different.  I play with Mizuno's, but I have no problems with Titleist, etc.

I am a big believer in getting fitted. So, sometimes going the used route is a little more suspect, but if you find some forged clubs you should be able to bend them to your fitting.  Just make sure they have the right shafts for your swing.

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
