That isn't the theory.  But even if it was, you are looking at too small of a sample size, many people haven't played much at all in 2016 (and those who have, have between 4 and 20 drives counted towards that average) Note the top 3 in driving distance for the 2015 season:

  1. Dustin Johnson
  2. Bubba Watson
  3. Jason Day

Those same 3 guys rank T2, 4, T2, respectively in top ten finishes for last year as well.  Also, 2 victories for DJ, 1 for Bubba, and 5 for JD.

You forgot number 3, Rory.

I'm very surprised it takes that much arguing over distance/accuracy being the most important skill to learn first. If your drive is 180 and in the rough, it's unlikely that you'll make a GIR or even a near GIR.

What happened 10-20 years ago where all these experienced golfers think the game is played 150 and in?

I was just looking at pgatour.com - I guess Rory didn't play enough last year over here because I don't see him on the list at all.  He was 3rd in 2014, though, on the PGA Tour, when he played 17 events, had 12 Top Tens, and 3 wins, so ... :)

He's still number 3 in the world according to MeandMyGolf, anyway. :-)

"World number 3 Rory McIlroy" ... I don't dispute that.  I was listing the top 3 in DRIVING DISTANCE, not world ranking. ;)

Rory seems to be a pretty long driver of the ball and is still number 3 in the world. He's only number 8 in that list at a "mere" 311 yards. . .:-P

Just reinforcing your original argument. . .
