No need to protect my privacy on the second post. That's all me, and it's a Melainey Gunning post (picture) showing a student improving. Apparently, by moving their head a foot forward during the backswing?

Horrible.

We never taught it this way, or even close.

Wow, that's unfortunate. How can Andy and Mike allow that kind of stuff to be posted? At what point did they think it was ok for the head to move forward during the swing? Mac and Bender don't teach this stuff.

S&T "by the book" is a good pattern: lead shoulder moves down and in to the center of rotation, head is centered. The obsession with "weight forward" and thoracic extension has made the S&T people a parody of themselves.

Mike Bennett doesn't move his head forward and overextend.

Here's a swing where he's trying to hit a big draw (ball back on purpose).

If anyone wants to know how they should really use a doorway/wall, do THIS.

So, the whole idea is to NOT let your weight move on the outside of EITHER feet at any point, especially at top of BS, yes?

For this thread the idea is to point out how silly the drill is and to not move your head forward on the backswing.

Oh yes wholeheartedly agreed. Sitting here at the desk, I actually stood up and simulated and that's what I noticed happened. But yes, not the thread for that discussion. I will post in the S&T thread (or just read, I am sure this can't be new information in that thread).

How do you know Bennett and Plummer are advocating or allowing that? (I ask that with complete sincerity, BTW.) I'm obviously not a S&T expert or pro, but I've never read or had any S&T instructor advocating anything but a steady head and centered pivot. I've seen drills where instructors will ask to exaggerate the side tilt on the backswing by trying to get the *feel* of the head moving forward, but it was always clear that the head should be steady as much as possible through the actual swing.

  1. They allow posts like that - and comment and endorse publicly - on their Facebook group, etc.
  2. Melainey is their head trainer.

That's not exaggerating side tilt (which is another mistake a lot of S&T folks make). It's an issue of over-extending. Side tilt changes the direction the head moves continually throughout the backswing. At A1, it makes the head go to and fro (targetward/away from target). At A4, it only moves the head up and down.

Thanks, Erik. Makes sense about the extending vs. tilting. It would be interesting to get Mike or Andy's take on the head movement.

It might, but at the same time, it raises the point about when something kind of stops being "yours." If they continue to allow people to do this, and even subtly endorse it, at which point does it become "theirs" too?

Right this isn't the first time we've seen posts like this, been going on for years. There are some S&T instructors that know/work closely with Mike and Andy that post videos on Instagram with golfers in some weird positions. "Super" stacked looking at 4 with a full speed motion.

Excuse my ignorance on this subject (just trying to learn something)... What exactly is the S&T and where did it originate? Do any of the pros endorse it?

To give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they just aren't tech savy and aren't reading those posts?

Stack and Tilt is a pattern/swing developed by Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett. They were influenced by the MORAD system (Mac O'Grady), The Golfing Machine and Mike Bender. They took some really good information and just went really extreme with it.

At one time they were working with 8-10 tour pros.

I believe the correct way to use a doorway in this scenario is to use it to run away from the guy teaching these swings, haha.

Yeah, and there's Melainey again, and Steve. That's one of the dumbest videos I've ever seen.

Seriously, a horrible, terrible video. Lousy.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
