Trying to spice up practice to keep my attention a bit. When I say "short game" I'm referring to the shots on and around the putting green. "Distance wedges", for me, is pretty vanilla practice and I accept that. I'm wondering what are some of your favorite pitching, chipping, and putting games/drills.

The only one I really do is what I call "up & down". I start with 5 balls and pick a hole. Then I chip and/or pitch to it. If I don't think I can make every putt, I pick a new spot, a new hole, and chip and/or pitch to that. When I think I can make all 5 putts (or 5 minus however many I chipped in), I putt. If I make them, I'm "done". If I miss one, I add that ball, and start again with chipping and/or pitching (now with 6 balls). Rinse, repeat, until I've gotten up and down with every ball.

The problem is, that can be a very quick game...or it can take forever if I'm not feeling super confident in my putting.

I'm sure there's something better. What do you guys do?

I am kind of manic with chipping green practice. I like to simulate in round conditions so I tend practice short game on the course late in the day when I can chip and pitch after holing out.

Especially if I miss a green and fail to get u&d. That way I can replay the shot, sometimes with different approaches to see how to best do it. Many times as much as the execution I realize I made a poor shot choice or misjudged the distance (speed) or read.

I will chip to 5 or 6 different practice pins from one lacation. Then go putt out at those 5 or 6 different pins. Once done putting from that location, I pick another location, and do the same thing again. This usually gives me plenty of different shots from off the green. The idea, after 5 or 6 different locations, (30-36 balls) is to have a 1.5 or better up and down average.

I do the same thing with longer pitch shots. Looking for an average near +/-2 for these pitch shots.

I like to practice when the green is quiet.   I will chip to each of the holes and try to one putt.   I actually keep track of each session and try to improve each time I go.

I tend to just throw a few balls down and try different lies distances. I keep it varied so I can work on touch. I also like to try different shots like 5 ft soft flop shots and low runners. I'll try to work out my vision for a shot i want. Trying to put some creativity into it.

Indoors, I have my daughter try this…

From two locations, she can "see" four different holes. I make her get up and down to the four holes she can see from each location consecutively. If she takes three strokes, she has to start over.

So "four in a row" twice from two locations. The total number of times you "start" is your score, and obviously, "2" is the lowest you can get.

Great idea here, Dave. I started doing this too. I usually play off hours by myself and Cary three balls with me. When I get to the approach shots, I play the two additional shots and putt them out for the extra short game practice.  Good game situation practice, when you drop them with different lies and terrains.
