I was at the dome last night with a couple guys; one who had a swing speed meter. Everybody took turns with different clubs seeing exactly where they stand.

Everyone was in the ~116 mph range. One guy, when really turning into it, hit 126!

When I stepped up, I was very surprised. My average driver swing rated in at 106. I consistantly outdrive each of these guys every week by 10+ yards.

How?

I'd say it likely that you are getting better ball contact(more even tempo) producing less spin on the ball (on average) then your buddies with slightly faster swing speeds. You could also have slightly better club fitting than your friends.

For me, it seems like I get my best drives with the most distance, and the least sidespin, when I swing at 80-90% (this also help me keep an even swing tempo).

If there was a guy with a 126 mph swing speed and his doesn't carry it -

carry it - 300+ yards every drive, there was somethin' wrong with that swing speed meter. 106 is well above average, 116 is borderline craziness, 126 is Tour speed.

Or they were swinging harder knowing they were being measured. Mine's about 108.

Another thing I was thinking was that maybe the meter was acutally capturing the ball speed at some of these hits.

If 126 is the ball speed, and assuming mediocre (1.4) contact, the guy's swinging only at 90 MPH. If it's near-perfect contact, he's only swinging at only 84.

I swing at about 100 normally. 105-108 if I lay into it. Might be higher nowadays because as I've been getting into shape I'm swinging faster and faster. Lately I'm resorting to just using my arms (cutting my speed down to the 90's) because for some reason when I try to use the rest of my body I end up with a snap hook. If I can't fix it...well, that's next year's problem.

Between 108-112 when I got fitted for my driver. I had a couple sneak up into the high teens, but they weren't good shots so I ignored them.

Launch Angle.... You're more at 1 with your driver than those other freaks .... Those swing speeds are crazy quick and you'd pretty much have to be a pro to do that with any consistency.

When I run into that problem I just concentrate on the lag... My snap hook is caused by releasing my hands too early when I start concentrating too much on distance control or trying to hit a "hard 6" instead of an "easy 5".

To maximize your distance you should match your swing speed with your ball compression. A good rule of thumb is the ball compression is 10 less then your swing speed.

Last time that I had it measured, which was 3 months ago so probably not that reliable, was 108 when I didn't try to kill the ball.

Highest was 116, lowest 104.

Edit: let me find the actual numbers from the study. I believe that they point out that players who consistently shoot in the 80's only have a swing speed of 85-90mph

    • Akshay Bhatia beat him in a playoff last year I think. He went something like -7 on his last 7 holes to get into a playoff and then rinsed a wedge on the 1st extra hole in a way that would have made Tommy (and Rory) blush.
    • Tristan, did you end up getting the new Edel wedges?  I'm very about due for new wedges.  I was trying other configurations a few years ago and somehow my 54 and 58 are both hand-me-downs that I never got around to getting as new and fitted, and my last new-as-in-new wedges were Ping Glides a long time ago.  I was thinking of Edel wedges earlier today, although their website seems to list only two fitters.   Did you end up getting them, and if so, what do you think of them?
    • @colin007, in terms of realistic sci-fi, its the best ever. They actually had an astrophysicist consult on the movie to be as accurate as possible with what we know about the universe.  For like dystopian, Blade Runner is probably king. Action/suspense is probably Alien/Aliens. Though Starship Troopers is fantastic. The Matrix is amazing.
    • Day 4 (August 14).  Full swing in my indoor practice room;  6-iron, off a mat, into a net.  Focus was on what I believe was my priority piece at last lesson (which, admittedly, was almost three years ago, due to absence).  I hit about a dozen balls this morning before going into the office.  (Also, errata to yesterday:  9 of the 12 coins were picked up on the second or third go around -- you can't pick up one on the first go around for that drill)
    • Watched The Gentlemen, took a little bit to get into it, but very good Guy Ritchie movie.  Collin Farrell and Hugh Grant were great. Give it a birdie.
