I thought he was more of a knowledgeable fan rather than an analyst for pros, but Jake Nichols has an excellent blog on golf analysis.

Does anyone think Spieth would have had a better shot to move in closer to the margin of the creek for the drop and use more trajectory to stop his 2nd shot at 12?

I mentioned it awhile ago. I said maybe the slope was not conducive to it or something - I imagine the slope goes down to the water there. That green is also not terribly deep.

Or maybe worried about moister ground closer to the creek? But it seems that the effect of the downslope on his trajectory from farther out exacerbated the green depth issue versus a closer and more lofted shot.
