Hi,
by reading a lot of posts, I noticed, that you guys have a lot of time to go golfing! Don't you work or have some social duties?

I am a golf enthusiastic, but I am not able to train like 5-10 hours a week and play several rounds a month...

So how many rounds of golf do you usually play a month and how many ours do you spend on the driving range a week?

Thank you for your replies!!!

Hi,

When you're unemployed and a student with some very easy classes, believe me it's very easy to find time to play golf. I figure I better get good now, while I have the time and the chance to, and then just maintain it when I don't have as much luxury.

Hi,

I'm in a PhD program. When you're in graduate school, a hobby unrelated to your field of study (I'm in Computer Science) is more or less required if you want to graduate with sanity. I do have to TA a class, but it's a freshman introductory course, so it isn't eating up as much time as a senior class did last year. As far as social issues, I do see my family regularly - they (mom, dad, sister) live near the course I like to play, so it's very convenient. Mom wants to take up golf again after not playing for nearly 25 years too. I see my friends regularly, too. Many of them golf, and the rest of us have other hobbies in common. Even before I took up golf, I determined I didn't want a girlfriend, a notable drain on the time and energies of many men my age. Frankly, at 24, I'm too young for one anyway. My past month and a half were busy with qualification exams, but otherwise, I generally play 3-4 rounds per month and maybe go to the practice areas another 3-4 times. I hit a small bucket at the range, but unless I'm working on something in particular, I'll then go to chip and putt. Those are more fun to practice anyway, since you actually get to hole the shots.

There have been several threads on this basic topic. But here goes.

I work, have a family, and I play golf. I find the time because I like to play golf and I believe people need something to do to get away from the stresses of work and homelife.

I am also not one of those guys who thinks he needs to spend every waking hour either working or home with the family. I have a job where I get a good deal of time off and I have a relatively short work day. So I take that time when many people are still at work and I play golf. And I still spend more time with my family than most men do.

Anyway, if you want to play golf you make time. That can be hard for some people. When I made my career choice I had golf in mind. I chose a job where I would have time to still pursue things I enjoyed doing.

If you ask my wife, I play too much. But that is just tongue in cheek. I take care of my household chores, but I play a lot of golf too. I don't spend hours practicing... My back only has so many shots left in it, so I save them for the course. I retired at the first of the year(2007), went to work part-time at the golf course so I could make my addiction more affordable. In the last 7 days I've carried my bag for 81 holes of golf (18 holes 4 times and 9 holes once).

Unfortunately, there is winter storm front due to hit tomorrow at about noon... so the golf may become less frequent now.

I am 14, almost 15 (december 13th) so during the summer I don't have anything to do. I took up golf this past summer, and I went to a week long junior class literally every week, the class was only 2 hours and 15 minutes so I still had time to practice. This summer I averaged about 9 rounds a month, from June-August I played 29.5 rounds. I practiced every day of the week, and when ever I could on the weekends, not sure exactly how long, and also after my rounds I would chip and putt for 45-60 minutes.

Here's what I play:

I play about 6-10 rounds a year, at least over the past 4-5 years. That doesn't average out to very often. During golf season I do hit balls a couple times a week on average while teaching my children. I played a lot of golf when I was younger, and don't feel the need to play as often now. I still can go out and shoot around par even though I don't play that often, which drives a lot of my friends crazy. They can't understand why I don't play more since I can still shoot around par. They don't realize that there are more important things in my life than golf. But everyone has different priorites. As long as I can go out and still shoot low 70's, and the occasional under par round I'm happy only playing the few times I do.

Ditto.

I'm glad I didn't take up (get addicted to) golf until after I was married and had my first child, because then I would be disapointed with the amount of golf I am able to practice/play. I get to either the range or the course about twice every three weeks, sometimes more if home or work allow it. I am a teacher, so during the summer I am available to golf more often. I take lessons, but not regularly.

i work for my family, so i guess my schedule is quite flexible. i average about 2-3 rounds per month, and have been spending 20 minutes swinging my irons at home recently.

marriage is coming up around february, which may mean less time for golf. i would be happy with 2 rounds per month after that.

I work at a private club. When I'm not working (and sometimes when I am) I'm playing/practicing. The end of daylight savings has really put a damper on my actual rounds, but I do still practice at least an hour a day, if not two, maybe three.

It might be easier to count the hours spent not golfing

I spend eight hours per week (April-October), which translates to 36 holes per week.

I'd play more, but the aggravation of spending four hours (or more) behind a foursome of 30-handicappers playing as deliberately as the final group at Augusta on Sunday sucks at least half the enjoyment out of the game. More if I'm playing poorly. There's just something about watching four guys who can't get out of a bunker in less than three shots plumb bob each putt outside a foot that drives me crazy.

Maybe I should just become a "range-only" golfer.

Too much time... often I feel I should play less and feel very guilty taking hours off work and family.

I only play about once or twice a month. Used to get really annoyed by slower players and at one point thought about taking a yoga pose (sit down with legs behind head and hands in front) to subtly send them the message to speed up a bit.

The last few times I've played though I've brought a book or iPod to pass the time. Amazing how much you can get through while waiting. Helps to keep the aggravation level down as well.

Not enough. I run two health clubs. Unfortunately not a 9-5 type of job. I also have a wife and two sons (13 and 9) that have activities. Because I end up stuck at work late at least a few nights each week, after work is out with the exception of my Wednesday evening league from May through August. My wife is my league partner so it's our night out. I also work most Saturdays from 9-1 or 2:00. The only way I can play on a Saturday is to take my wife, which I actually enjoy. However with the kids it's not always easy to just say you guys hang out here, we are going golfing. That leaves Sunday morning. I play with my wife's brother and her uncles. We go out early and only play 9 holes. In the Summer I am home by 9:30. Unfortunately now we don't tee off until at least 9:00.

I am retired from my first career and am an independent contractor in my second. My daughter is grown and living across the country. Subsequently I manage to play between 10 and 15 times a month. I reserve almost all of my golf time for the course and little for the range. Thus my 19 handicap.

I work 40+ hours a week as a therapist and am also in a PhD program full time. Needless to say, 2 rounds a month and a trip to the range here and there are the best I can do right now. I think about golfing a lot, though, does that count?

Too much time... often I feel I should play less and feel very guilty taking hours off work and family.

I hear this a lot, everytime one of these types of threads get discussed.

Please, don't take this the wrong way but why? Why does doing something you enjoy cause guilt. I just don't understand that mentality. Maybe its because I have been involved in athletics since before I was 6. Sports have played a huge part in my life. I was raised by an athlete father who coached two sports and always played golf. My grandfather was the same, he played golf three times a week for 40 years with the same guys. It was no big deal they were always gone sat and Sunday mornings. We did our own thing until they came home and then we did family stuff the rest of the day. I ask because I am trying to figure out if maybe its me. Am I so calloused that I can go do my thing and feel no guilt? I know its not hurting my family because I grew up the same way and I have no hangups. I had a freakin' fantastically happy childhood! So give me some insight please. I am not saying you are wrong nor am I making fun of you. I just really want to know.

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
