Yesterday I went to Miles of Golf in Ypsilanti for a driver fitting. My first fitting experience. I told the fitter, Adam that I wanted to have my current driver (R11) fitted because if bought it used years ago and thought the shaft was too long. Turns out I was right. He fitted me for  44.75" shaft. He also had me hitting a new a Ping G driver further than my current driver by about 30 yards further (215/185). He fit me for the sf Tec regular flex to cure my over the top slice.

My question for the wise users of tst is could I get away with buying the G30 used on eBay with the same specs of sf Tec, regular shaft and have it cut down? I'm a frugal soul and spending $400 on a driver is a lot for a guy that tries to find a happy medium between function and value. Or maybe I should just fix my swing and keep my current driver the R11. I've already adjusted the angle to 10°, like the ping was set at. The weights were adjust set for a slicer. Thoughts?

There is very little difference between the two. Just a slightly lower CG for the G over the G30

You probably won't notice much, if any, difference between the G and G30 SF Tec but just make sure the shaft is cut properly so the club swing weight is the same as the one you tested.

The biggest difference I felt when doing the review for the G is the sound. I think Ping improved it with the G.

Otherwise pretty similar. I did not see any significant swing speed increase.

The shaft was the alta 55 standard ping shaft. Most of the G30s on ebay have the TFC 419 standard shaft. I'm not entirely sure how different they are, but the PING site says the 419 has the same specs.

The standard Ping G and G30 swing weight is D1 with a 45.75" shaft.  You said the fitter suggested a 44.75" shaft length so if you buy one off eBay you'd have to take it to a golf store to get the shaft shortened which would likely throw off the swing weight if it isn't done properly.

For what it's worth, the G30 got me the best numbers of any driver I tested last year. I just didn't end up buying any drivers in 2015.

Yes the shafts and the heads are very similar.

I ended up picking up the G30 SF Tec on eBay. I'll need to have the shaft cut down, but am looking forward to hitting it. After looking at both at Dick's, the G30 higher cog was closer to what I'm paying with now in my r7. Might be why I kept saying the G series at the fitting. Wish me luck. I'll post how it turns out.

One thing I'll say. Take the new G30 to your shop and put it on the swingweight scale and see where it is. Then, after you have the shaft cut and the club re-gripped, weigh it again. You may like the way it performs at the shorter length with no additional weight. But, if you start to get a little bit quick from the top, you may have to add a little weight to the clubhead to get the swingweight back up to where it was.

An update. I received the G30, had it cut down to 44.75" and played with it yesterday at my golf league after testing it at the driving range twice over the weekend. The stats are in the Game Gold that after one round I hit the fairway more, but lost a little distance. I mark the distance loss as not being familiar with the club yet. When I become more familiar, I'll be willing to test it out more. But I'm happy with it so far. The sound alone is cool compared to my R11.

Amazing how that sound makes you feel. I traded a buddy an old Cleveland Launcher Comp I had. I had cut an inch off the shaft, re-gripped, and added tape to get the swingweight back to a D2 or D3. It makes kind of a dull "clunk", but he hits the thing a country mile! Drove a 320 yard par 4 the last time we played! He gave me a TM R7. Makes a nice "crack!" when I hit the ball, but it really doesn't go anywhere!

His buddy had a Ping G30 (I believe) in his bag for a while, but it has been replaced by an Adams. This guy has a closet full of drivers! He let me swing that Ping a few times on the range, and it felt pretty nice. If the R7 doesn't work out, I might make him an offer for the Ping.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
