I have been playing the same set of Tommy Armour 845s irons my entire adult life. I somehow lost the 3 iron, but the rest of the set remains intact.

I am a bogey golfer and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

My question is, would I see any real improvement in score by upgrading to new irons, taking a 20 year leap in technology?

Over the course of the season, I would say yes.

I would say probably not - 845s are really good (cavity back game improvement) clubs.  Only two things stick out as possible reasons I might agree with @saevel25:

  1. If you are talking about going the whole nine yards and doing a private fitting AND the results show that your new clubs are vastly different than your old ones (big difference in length, lie, shaft, etc, then you would probably see improvement.
  2. This already doesn't apply to you, but if you were coming from older clubs that were blades, or just otherwise pieces of junk, which 845s are not.

I only play 15-20 rounds per year, unfortunately.

Thank you, this is why I haven't upgraded yet, I simply can't justify the expense if it likely won't improve my game. My irons are the strongest part of my game anyway.

Is this my buddy Kevin? I see a lot of guys still using 845s. It doesn't sound like you need more out of your irons than what you are needing now. If you are accurate and consistent. Stick with them. If you are looking to change ball flight or shaft stiffness, check out some new stix.

Thanks, I am actually quite happy, I just didn't know if I was really missing out on something.

You may consider replacing the 3 iron with a hybrid. That will help you. They are easy to hit, launch the ball high and are good out of the rough. You can find used ones at Golfsmith or E-bay really cheap.

How worn are the faces of the irons and have you ever had them regripped?  It might be that giving them a bit of a health check with a pro (regrip and getting the grooves checked) will give you a benefit from your existing clubs without the need to get anything new.  Take it even further and you could get the loft and lies checked for your swing.

I recently had them regripped, but that is a great question about the grooves, they may be worn. I will ask my golf shop guy the next time I stop in. They were fitted for me when I bought them, I haven't grown so they should still be good. May be worth a look again. Thanks.

A 3 and 4 hybrid are definitely on my shopping list. I don't hit my 4 iron very consistently, could probably improve there.

I have my old 845's and compared them to my 588TT's and a set of TEE Hybrid Pro H's I put together over the winter. I considered using the 845's again, no real reason just a cool old club. To get an more apples to apples comparison I re-shafted the 845's with the same shaft I use in the others KBS Tour.

Loft to loft distance was the same as my typical patterns with good hits but the 845's were considerably less forgiving for really poor strikes. Stuff like shots out towards the toe felt very harsh and the distance drop was considerable compared to the other two heads. The 845's were much noisier with mishits too anything not very close to the SS came with a clank. Despite being the GI club of the past the 845 is a small head, I've seen modern blades that are bigger.

@Golfingdad has the right idea. If you got a fitting and the fitting showed major benefit for newer irons, you might make the change.

Also, @boogielicioussuggested a hybrid to replace the 3i, also a good idea.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
