I don't ground any with enough force it could influence low point. I play with a guy that takes practice swings and sweeps the grass with the driver. He hits a bunch of crappy drives and shots. He also presets for a flip with a reverse shaft lean it's the weirdest shit I've ever seen. To counter the low point being 4 inches behind the ball he has to raise up and lunge at the ball.

Hi all,

I have played a few rounds now, trying some of the tips here.  So far I still feel more relaxed and confident if I let the driver rest on the ground at set up (I don't have any force down on ground as Dave2512 mentioned).  When I hovered the club I felt like I was gripping too tightly, or tensing up slightly.  I also tried the iron alignment by grounding the club ahead of the ball and then moving back for the swing.  It worked ok, and seemed to help with direction.  I did also lightly rest the club at address though.

Ive seen a lot of very good players that lean the driver shaft that way. It could just be a strong grip.

Kind of a funny side thought.....As I stated earlier, I felt more confident when allowing the club to rest on the ground, except in sand and rough I hover, especially because I CAN'T ground in a bunker, and I have none of the lack of confidence issues I have in the fairway or on the tee........so it's the mental game....as usual  :)

I've taken to hovering my driver as I started hitting the ball way too high on the face. Since I started the strikes have been in a much better spot vertically at least.

I hover everything out of habit as a beginner. In my experience if you hover, you should be mindful of not freezing before take away - builds lot of arm tension. I am trying to learn to at least briefly 'light' ground before take away because of that.

I find the address club to ball alignment habits of folks interesting too. Like those who toe address or heel address for different reasons. For eg. some will heel address for a 'hold off' swing but some one else will heel address so that it instinctively forces them to move club 'in' before impact, sorta anti-over the top move. Then again some toe address it for the same effect.

All good, just cool how individualized folks are in their golf 'habits'.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
