Recently i've been playing a lot more golf, and have developed some very nasty looking calluses on my left hand, just beneath my fingers. I've read up online on how to get rid of them. Just wondering if you guys have had any experience with this and what you've done.

Athletic tape helps. Keep playing and the calluses will build up, and you won't notice them anymore.

I've spent a lot of time in the gym the past 6 years, so they were built up, but the existing calluses on my left hand have swollen up to the size of grapes and are very bad looking. Would i apply the athletic tape directly above them in 1 strip?

Significant swelling makes me wonder if you're doing something with your grip or swing that puts way too much pressure on these areas.  You might want to see a decent golf instructor and have him give you an evaluation.  Some calluses are normal for golfers, but not what you've described.

I have pretty good sized calluses along the base of my fingers on both my hands and on the middle and ring finger of my right. These are common.

I sometimes put athletic tape on the middle and ring fingers of my right hand to prevent blisters, but swelling seems odd. Couldn't say what ails you there. Allergic reaction to something in a glove maybe?

I am of the opinion that the calluses themselves don't swell up. They are just dry, hard skin caused by friction of some sort.

You might have calluses on top of blisters. How deep those blister go, if they are blisters, is call for a visit to a dermitologists.

If the swelling is underneath the calluses, and in the joints at the base of your fingers, that's reason for more concern I would think.

IMO, any troublesome swelling, anywere is cause for doctor's visit.

I've played without gloves for a few years. I used to get calluses early in the season, but not anymore. If you swing a club everyday, your skin gets used to it.

After I learned to properly grip the club and I developed a good technique in my swing my calluses have practically disappeared and I can use the same glove for a year without any holes. It did take me six years to reach this stage though!!!

This makes sense to me, something new (golf) may be causing blisters under the calluses you've developed in the gym.  I would agree that perhaps a trip to the doctor is in order, to make sure its not something really serious, and stand by my suggestion of getting some good golf instruction, to try and address the cause of the problem.

    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.

    • Well the first advice I would give is to look at your swing. If you are swing out to in, it may be difficult to fix your misses with club adjustments. They would only be a bandaid. I use midsize grips because I have long fingers and I feel I have more control with them. I also have tinkered with shaft length and swing weight. But I know when I miss it’s because my swing was off.
