And yet, nobody, not one of those self-styled experts, has come up with a workable simplification of the rules.  Do you suppose that might mean that the USGA and the R&A are on the right track, and the bitching is just that.... bitching?

Certainly it's easier said than done, and I don't claim to have the answers.  The governing bodies do a tremendous amount to preserve and protect the game, but that doesn't mean that they're infallible or that there's not room for improvement - the incident at this year's U.S. Open being a prime example.  That's why they make periodic revisions to the rules, but it won't happen if people don't point out the need for the changes.  So no, I think that sometimes the "bitching" is not just bitching.  At any rate, my primary point was that you don't have to love every single aspect of the game to love it as a whole.

But in 2014, they allowed Scott Langley's because it was still moving.  At least according to the announcers. (And they always get it right.  Right?  :-X)

On this one, he watches it for about 8 seconds after it stops before he even starts walking toward it, does not walk directly toward it, and then stops to watch again for about another 7 seconds before it drops. Feherty says, "You're not allowed to hit a moving ball."

I seen this video for an Olympic commercial?

Yeah, it's a beer commercial they're showing during the Olympics.  That's what made me look it up, because it looked like a clip from a real tournament--not staged for the commercial.  And it looked to me like it shouldn't have been allowed, which made me think of this thread.

Is it a beer soccer fans drink?

Yes, it is different because the rule says it is.  It can't be against the "nature of the game" (whatever that is?), because the rules are what define the game.  Once the ball is overhanging the hole, you have a reasonable amount of time to walk to the hole (not stand and watch, then circle the hole like a boxer sizing up his opponent) plus 10 seconds.  The 10 seconds is a total time, and can be a combination of delays both before and after approaching the hole.  If the ball hasn't fallen by then, it is deemed by rule to be at rest.  If it starts moving again after that, or if it never stopped moving, and falls in the hole, then you add a stroke, pick it out of the hole, and move to the next tee.

The gravity of this has just dawned on me ... Noonan actually should have lost to Smails and Brian Doyle Murray blew the call.  That ball overhung that hole for 52 seconds!

I wouldn't know. I don't think I know any soccer fans.

    • Day 313 - I played 18 today. First and last holes were ugly, but I actually played pretty well. Driver was great, irons were alright, and the short game was better than average.
    • Day 205 (23 Nov 24) - Worked with the alignment rod and 7i  in reference to ball position in relation to lead foot on full iron shots, noticed an increase in thinned shots last couple of rounds - better contact with the balls (hard foam) during the drill/swing rehearsals.
    • Have you gone to a fitting? A good fitting will not only give you a clubhead but a shaft, etc. that will suit you.
    • It's not like the Nike Vapor Pro are exactly a highly sought set of irons.
    • Last night I was putting my Nike Vapor Pro Irons back in my bag.  I had my sons i500’s in there the last couple months after we all went to Top Golf .  I picked up the Nike’s this past spring and they are like new.  I feel guilty using them… I have other irons that aren’t valuable that I could use instead.
