May be a big fat rumor, but fun to speculate. I'm not so sure I'd be comfortable w/Google owning Twitter though.

The issue with Twitter has always been how to does the mothership make money from it. They are starting now with "Promoted" tweets, but the question of revenue still exists. Their value now is the community. How many users they have. Nice to have, but need to monetize that.

I own just over 1000 shares of TWTR. This is very welcomed news. Like @mchepp pointed out, I am looking to dump it on big news for a  nice profit. It seems overvalued per the revenue aspect. Take the money and run.

I own 1000 shares of TWTR too (bought them as a hedge to some options trades I was doing). TWTR as @mchepp stated has been unable to monetize their advertising properly.  They have also had problems with attracting new users and maintaining users due to questionable moderation policies.

Like what?

I see it more as Twitter is not often as multimedia rich, and people are moving more toward SnapChat and Instagram. Even though 140 characters is not a lot, it's still more "work" or effort than a picture with a two-word caption.

I was referring to some of the recent stories where celebrities were closing their Twitter accounts due to harassment.

Twitter is trying to move more towards video and images but it's losing the battle against Instagram and SnapChat which seem to be the platforms teens have now adopted and left their parents behind on Twitter and Facebook.

I really don't understand why people would want to spend their time on twitter. Seems like it is mostly a sea of comments which are largely ignored. Maybe it's just not for me but I really think it would be a complete waste for google to buy it. However, google is much smarter than I am about this and if they are considering this, I am sure the plan is far greater than the current twitter and have determined an avenue to use it for better advertising.

If that's what you think Twitter is, then you're not using it properly.

I have had many, many important, far-reaching conversations on Twitter. And some fun ones, too.

Apparently not. I'm not that invested in it.

And since they're public, you learn a thing or two from threads that go long. If you're good at curating, you'll find a lot of good info and interesting conversations. And because of the 140 limit, people get to the point.

You get breaking news faster. It's also useful for learning languages, especially "living" language - you see slang you would not otherwise in a classroom setting.

I'm not sure it's worth anyone except Google to purchase it.   Google Plus was a great social network for the 23 people who signed up for it, so Google could use some help there.   Twitter does have a horrible trolling problem and too many people jump on band wagons to harass people.

Now it is a unique service and can be used very effectively.  I don't use it that much, but it's possible to do some really good things with it.   But to me it's the least of the social networks.

So glad I sold my shares of TWTR on Friday for a profit. Google confirmed they are not placing a bid and it dropped 20% today.

Smart move, I think Google is getting nervous about anti-trust given their internal initiatives and the anti-trust allegations Salesforce.com made regarding Microsoft acquiring LinkedIn

    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
    • I agree with @klineka, you're clearly doing something right.  Its always going to be a bit of a guessing game if you don't have any scoring history.  On the other hand, understanding that it takes only 54 holes to establish an actual handicap, and they have about 6 weeks in which to play and post enough scores, I don't think its at all unreasonable to require them to have an official handicap before they become eligible for prizes.  I don't know how you structure the fees for the series of competitions, but if its possible they'll play with the group without being eligible for prizes, you could consider a way to let them do that without contributing to the prize pool.
    • I run tournaments and want to put in a local rule that allows relief from tree roots and rocks that are not loose impediments. We have some really terrible lies in some of our courses in my area and nobody is getting paid enough to break clubs. Let me know if you think the verbage for this rule makes sense. Local Rule Roots and Rocks You may move your ball from a tree root or buried rock one club length for free relief no closer to the hole. However you may not use this rule to get relief from a tree, bush, boulder, or other foliage hindering your swing. Your only option here is to play it as it lies or take an unplayable for a one stroke penalty.
    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
