Those are very different target audiences, though.

I want so badly to believe that cigar jokes or references to Bill's infidelity would only hurt Trump, but sadly I'm not sure it would.

I will never vote for Hillary, but in terms of political experience, Trump can't compete and he's making a mistake trying to pretend he understands the issues as well as she does.

He did make some great points that given all her experience she hasn't solved any of the problems she helped create but that sort of logic is lost on most voters.  He won the primaries by emphasizing the weaknesses of his opponents, the only way he wins the election is to do the same to Hillary.  A large number of people that watch CNN and other liberal media outlets don't know the full story on Benghazi, her e-mails, mishandling of classified documents etc.  He needs to make sure by the end of the debates that everyone watching hears the whole story uncensored.

IMO, Trump needs to discredit Hillary, call her out for the hypocrite she is, in every facet of her professional and personal life.  It's dirty politics but she's playing it too so as far as I'm concerned nothing is off limits as long as it's true.

I disagree. The problem for him is, she's been getting nailed on those same issues this whole time.  At some point, right or wrong, people stop caring. When it comes to personal stuff that is veritable, there's way more dirt on Trump that can and will keep surfacing. Like the soft core porn he made a cameo in. Sure, it's not a huge deal to most of us, but it just chips away at whatever presidential image he has.

She did a good job deflecting him. The positions she's held have very little individual power where she alone could make drastic changes. His arguement is weak there.

Trump can't act like he did in the Primaries is because he won by targeting 35% of 27% of the population of this country. It's probably less than that because the voter turnout for registered Republicans is not 100%. A very small portion of this country actually picks the two candidates.

It's too late for that to work. Trump has already taken too much damage to win a rhetorical attrition; he can't land enough clean attacks on Clinton to disqualify her without disqualifying himself as well.

Trump does not control his own destiny in this race; he needs to conjure some form of self-discipline to stop trying to dig himself out of the hole he's in, and be ready to take advantage of any mistakes Hillary makes in the remaining weeks of this campaign (as she almost surely will).

Trump has a personality disorder that he cannot help.   In the next debate, if he hears something perceived as a personal attack, 9 out of 10, he will implode/explode.   Clinton just needs to needle him with a right bait.  Even if Trump can control himself (almost not possible) in the 2nd debate, he will have to face his own demons in the 3rd debate.  I bet he self destructs again in the next two debates.   Clinton got this unless she self destructs (e.g, "deplorable" comment), too.

( I hate Clinton with passion but not crazy enough to put a 7 year old brat without any experience to the POTUS.  The latest 3:00 am tweets ... :pound: )

Ranting aside, the debate committee admitted there was a problem with Trump's mic.

Most people gave Hillary the win because she didn't pass out on stage so the expectations were low on both sides.

I am one of those "most" and I gave it to Clinton b/c of a lot of things that Trump did in the debate.

The mic had nothing to do with his bad performance, unless the campaign has meant to communicate for the five days that their candidate is so fickle, a minor technical glitch is enough to send him into a tailspin. There's no benefit in making an issue out of it.

The liberal media made an issue out of it because they accused him of using cocaine or sniffing Adderall as the reason for the sound coming from the mic.

Actually, it was Howard Dean.  The media and others are not supporting HD's assertion.  I don't either.

As to the Microphone incident, it will work for DT supporters.   For the rest, it will sound like DT is whining.   I.e, DT's claim of microphone damaging his debate performance will move more undecided votes to HC if any.   Since the debate, DT gave a lot of reasons for the undecided to move to HC and the latest polls are showing the result.   And given today's comments from DT (doubling down by going after Clinton affairs), he will lose more women's vote if that is even possible.

I just saw it.  Alec was much better than his counterpart.   Clinton won this debate, too, by a landslide.  :-)

Not true.

A record-setting vote for a third-party candidate would not have the same effect as low voter turnout.

Plus, at an even more basic level than "sending a message," voters choosing a third-party candidate are still voters who might have, without a third-party candidate they supported at all, might have voted for one of the first two. The math doesn't work. I'm sure you can Google it, too, but… here's one example: http://www.redstate.com/leon_h_wolf/2016/03/16/vote-third-party-candidate-vote-hillary/ .

You're wrong, and acting superior about it.

He's a few percentage points behind Hillary right now, I thought I saw.

Sorry, but I never once said that a vote for a 3d party candidate is "the same" as a vote for Hillary.  In fact, I took great care to avoid saying that.  Neither did I say anything about low voter turnout vs a record setting 3d party vote.

There was nothing wrong with Trump's mic. The noise gate wasn't working properly and that's on the audio engineer, but I listen to content instead of what the equipment was doing. Trump was making Hillary look charismatic with his continuous interruptions. Still by the end of the debate he looked and acted like a beaten dog. He needed to attract votes of minorities and women. Stop and Frisk did not win him minority votes. And comments about Rosie O'Donnell did not do him any favors with women. He got his ass beat.

Pence is going to get his ass handed to him with voters on Tuesday. Why? Because Pence is not going to help Trump gain votes from a group whom he desperately needs to win - women. The only groups Pence will help with are those who are solidly in Trump's camp - Evangelical Christians and White Males.... even if he wins the VP debate on other issues just because of his policies in the State of Indiana.

I don't see the debates changing anyone's vote at this point. Trump has done so much damage with the groups he's already alienated that he has no hope of winning any of them over. He caved during the last debate on gun control, something that the 2nd Amendment people were holding onto, and he adopted an identical position to Hillary Clinton there -- identical to what is on Hillary's web site. All that will happen is that he'll solidify his support among white males and evangelical Christians. The electoral map will look similar to 1996 except Ohio going to Trump and Colorado and VA going to Clinton. Johnson and Stein will play spoilers in a few states.
