Hi guys,

So an area of my game that I feel i've always struggled with is green reading. I feel my stroke is ok, but, for an 8 handicapper I don't hole anywhere near the amount of 6 foot and under putts that I feel I should. I'm often talking with my playing partners about it as I just don't seem to be able to see the subtle breaks, I prefer a big breaking putt as I can clearly see which way it will move. I notice a big difference when I play in a team event and have others reading my putts, I hole considerably more putts.

This got me looking into Aimpoint and wether taking a course would be a good idea.

Has anyone taken one? Are they good and worthwhile or indeed has anyone found a different way to improve green reading in the usual conventional way.

Thanks in advance

Gareth

You may have to jump forward to Express. AimPoint started with a midpoint read, and then many converted or learned Express.

A class is best, but they also have a DVD - I'd suggest class first, then DVD to refresh. They have also added speed training - it's all interesting and most converts have found it valid.

I've even gone to less cushiony shoes to better read slope of the green.

I've taught AimPoint basically since the beginning, so if you have any questions, just ask.

AimPoint Express is some of the best money you can spend on golf because once you learn it, it takes very little to remain effective, and it's a skill that you can use the rest of your life without updating or anything.

Thanks iacas, that's great. It's good to hear someone in the know talk about it. Part of my problem, I personally feel is I played a professional cuesport for 11 years so looking at terrain and slopes just is really alien to me. I've lost count of the amount of times people say "I thought you'd have been a good putter, based on your background" hahaha

As I said I don't feel it's the stroke, I'm positive it's just I can't see breaks very well.

I'm really thinking Aimpoint is the way to go for me

Regards

Gareth

Do it. You won't regret it. Some of the best money you'll ever spend on this game and the closest thing to a magic bullet in all of golf.

I'm a mid handicap player.   This year I took an Aimpoint Express 1 class.  I wasn't sure what I was getting into before the class, just what I'd read on this forum.    It was the best money I've spent on golf this year.   I'm still struggling with distance but I've made more putts with breaks this year than I thought possible.   I still surprise myself when I hit a 6-10' breaking putt that is 2, 3 or 4% slope.

Highly recommended!

No, it's not expensive ... in relative terms.

Most will benefit from it.  I took it and it helped me improve less than a stroke.   My main issue is that it's hard for me to feel the slope with my feet.

My Aimpoint Express 1 class was a clinic.   There was only a high school player and myself and the class was one hour long.    The cost was $100.   Most clinics teach Express 1 and 2 which is longer and cost more.

Those that have trouble at first benefit from buying a level and practicing with it for a bit. I've yet to meet people who can't feel the slope pretty well once they figure it out.

I have that problem when it's a straight putt. ;-)

Seriously, it takes a little time, but you will feel it. I had reservations at first since my hips get out of whack. Turns out not to be an issue. Stick with it. It will come.

I did some research on line a couple months ago (just to see the jist of it) and bought a digital level to practice feeling the slope. I ended up practicing with the little bits of information I was able to find for the last two months just to see what I thought and if I should look into it further.  So far I have really liked it and ended up purchasing the DVD (not many options for instructors or clinics in Oregon).  Like many have said in other threads, my misses are much closer and I have had many more lip outs.  I have also noticed that with reading more break I have putted with a little more touch, which has for the most part eliminated the dreaded 10 footer straight across the slope that ends up going 6 feet past the hole.  I think when I am standing over the putt and see that my start line is way over here, I subconsciously hit the ball a little softer so it can actually break down to the hole enough.

In hindsight, I wish I would have just bought the DVD right away.

Thanks for the input guys. We're based in UK and have a guy called Jamie Donaldson (not the former Ryder Cup player) who is a level 4 instructor. He's based at Woburn which is around 2 1/2 hours away. He coaches Ian Poulter and has worked with Adam Scott. It's  £100 an hour for a private session but first session has to be 2 hours.

Expensive? Yes, however we spend upwards of £600 on a set of irons so for something that could help you for the rest of your playing days it sounds like a good investment
