Can anybody suggest a link or source that covers the common issues, or basic rules? I admit to never dedicating much time to learning the rules of golf (too much of that in the rest of my life, I suppose...)

Custom fit RBZ irons. Taylormade RBZ driver. Some crappy old high-bounce Macgregor wedge and an even older Mizuno 5 wood. Haven't settled on a ball yet - still looking. Decades of football, weightlifting and boxing came together to create the world's worst golfer. I'm slowly correcting that now.

Courtesy, humility, and a sense of fair play covers most of it.  For specifics: pick up a copy of The Rules of Golf and look things up (after the round) as the need arises.  That way your knowledge of the game will increase by dint of real world, personal, experience; rather than by rote memorization of hypothetical examples.  For fun, and historical perspective, you might Google: 1744 - Gentlemen Golfers of Leith.

In der bag:
Cleveland Hi-Bore driver, Maltby 5 wood, Maltby hybrid, Maltby irons and wedges (23 to 50) Vokey 59/07, Cleveland Niblick (LH-42), and a Maltby mallet putter.                                                                                                                                                 "When the going gets tough...it's tough to get going."

There are quite a few quick guides you can find at any golf shop. Illustrated ones help.

The publication that @Rulesman suggested can also be found on the USGA website here, for those of us in the States:

https://www.usgapublications.com/collections/rules-of-golf

The USGA also offers the complete rules, and the decisions, and an illustrated version.  The rules and decisions can be accessed online at:

http://www.usga.org/rules/rules-and-decisions.html#!rule-01

If you find that you've become truly interested in understanding the rules, I suggest you read "The Principles Behind the Rules of Golf."  I wouldn't suggest it as entry-level reading on the rules, but it offers some very interesting viewpoints on why the rules are what they area.
