Best Shot of the Week

First 9 holes of the year last Saturday and I could not hit a good drive to save my life. 6th hole par 5 495yds and I shanked the drive to the next fairway to the right. I hit a 6i back out into the fairway dogleg left leaving myself about 170 to the pin. After I yelled at the kids ahead of me to put the flag back in the hole (they were walking away from the green without doing so) I hit an absolute laser-ray with a 4i that ended on the edge of the green, 5 yards out! That made all the other mediocre shots worthwhile. Fairway wood, irons, putter, all on fire - driver? Not so much.

201 yd par 3 with water lining left of the green. I'm not a long hitter so I pulled the 4 wood - hit it to 8' & missed birdie putt. Nothing epic, but one of the best fairway wood shots ever

It may not seem like much, but there's a 154 yard Par 3 on one of the courses that I play that absolutely gives me hell.  It's a narrow, but fairly deep green with bunkers guarding both sides at the front and the green drops steeply off the back, so if you're not perfect, you've got an awkward 2nd shot for an up and down.  I have been trouble getting the distance correct, 150 yards on this hole isn't my typical 150 yard shot for some reason.  I've ended up in every place on that hole besides the green in recent weeks, typically I'll hit the green and the ball will bounce (yes, the greens are rock hard) over the back.  Today I took a 9 iron, deciding that if I wasn't going to be on the green, I was going to be short and have a simple chip.  I guess in my mind, I knew I didn't have enough club, so I swung harder and hit an extremely high, towering 9 iron that landed 2 feet short of the pin and rolled out to about 8ft.  I had a perfect slightly downhill putt in a trough between two mounds on the green and nailed it.

Not a difficult hole from the card, but for some reason it kicks my butt, so my payback was a birdie today.

Punched out of the left trees on a par five to 155ish yards. Perfect 7-Iron with a small draw and nice divot. Ball mark was a couple yards from the hole and the ball stopped hole high with a 12" tap-in for birdie.  Good way to finish.

After an uncommon hook off the box, I have a bad shot left. I was 15 yards off the fairway, 150 yards out, and the hole was uphill some 30 feet, on hard pack dirt! I had a low tree in front of me with no view of the top of the hill where the green was. Two bunker in front on the green. While mostly guessing at what to do I hit a high flying 8-iron over the tree and keeping it away from the bunkers. I got it to the fringe on the back of the green and putted from there to save a par. That could have easily been a disasterous hole for me and ended up being the best hole of the round.

Executive course, short dogleg left par 4.  Pulled a 5i off the tee, hit a tree and landed in left rough about 100yds from tee - decent lie tho'.  But trees blocked direct approach to green.  Option 1: 100 yd shot (GW) to leave about 120 yds to green, or Option 2: strong draw with 7i to leave a short chip.  I went with option 2, hit my best draw shot to date (with bro watching from much better position).  Of course I didn't get up and down (poor chipping all afternoon) and bogied but still that draw was sweet .....

This monday at Foxford Hills Golf club on the 4th hole I overshot my wedge over the green. I then used a pw to chip and roll for about 25 feet with a 4 ft break left to right. I saw that ball roll, hit the flagstick and sink into the hole. What a great feeling. :)

Played at Portstewart in Northern Ireland over the weekend with David Owen. On the par three 6th - a mere 135 yards - he hit his shot straight at the flag and despite the two club wind coming from ahead and right, it never moved. It landed less than an inch from the hole with the pitchmark pressing the cup. It was beautiful to watch.

The hole is called Five Penny Piece - you can see why.

7th hole at Cedar Creek in San Antonio. I was 235 out (bad drive) on the fairway. This is my typical distance for a drive. So I figured I was safe to pull out my trusty 4 hybrid. This club is consistantly a nice 200 yard club for me. I step up to the ball planning to play down the center of the hole and set up a short wedge shot. I took my shot and BAM that thing made perfect contact. I should add I did not have a view of the greens or most of the fairway. I was just infront of a hill. I ran up said hill to try and follow my ball. By the time I got on the hill my ball rested on the green, with the foursome in fornt of us looking at my ball. I gave them a wave and let them know I did not plan on reaching the green when I caught up with them on the next hole, (they were damn slow). Anyways, my shot carried to the green. There was a nice divot and my ball was a few feet from there.

To shorten it up, I hit a 4h 235 yards to the center of the green, a good 30 yards further than I expected.

After driving to an impossible position, chipping out almost into the woods on the other side of the fairway, hitting a mediocre 3rd shot, sinking a curling 40' putt out of the fringe for par to break my partner's heart. He was in the fairway the whole time, for a bogey. I was driving well which is not my usual fare but this was the coupe de hummer.

Yesterday, on the hardest hole on the course, a 430yd dogleg left par 4 to an uphill green.  Low draw drive ended up short and in the left rough behind some trees.  GPS listed it as 219 out.  I hit a high drawing 5 wood around the trees and dead on the pin.  Missed the 8 footer for birdie.

Today, on a par 5, I pulled my drive 30 yards right of the fairway into a dirt area just short of a creek that crosses the fairway.  A large oak with low hanging branches was 20 yds in front of me, an OB 8' chain link fence about 70 yds, and then another tree with higher branches about 20 yds past the fence. Had to go under the first tree, over the fence, under the last tree. Punched a 7 iron, back in my stance, and cleared everything, just as I imagined it.  Saved par.  You'd think a guy who could pull that off could hit a fairway!

My best shot last week, my last time out, was my 2nd into the par 5, 18th at Dos Lagos in Corona, CA. Water all along the right side, pin tucked in front-right by the lake... I took out a 6 iron and aimed at the left edge of the green, took a safe line, managed to hit a gentle cut to avoid the front left bunker and caught the slope (which brought the ball down to within 6 feet for an eagle try) and I sank it!

Can't wait to get back out on the course! :)

Had competition play yesterday At GC de Twentsche in Delden Netherlands. This is a long course only 2 par 4's under 400 yards.

I had a awful driver day. All drives where kinda hooky. Also on the par 5 7th. My teeshot ended up missing the fairway 30 yrd left.

In verry thick rough. I managed to get a 7 iron out but to hard the club face from closing i faded the ball behind a tree on the fairway about 175 yards from the hole.

My competitor was in good position about 110 yards from the hole. I took a 5 iron out and tried to fade it round the tree. It was my best shot off the day, it ended up 6 feet from the cup witch i converted for birdie, and a win on that hole. I won the match 5 up with 4 to play. I never used the driver again on that day

My best shot of yesterday was on the par 3 17th. It's a slight downhill, 155 yard shot, always dead into the wind.  I pulled out a smooth 8 iron from my arsenal.  It started about 6 feet right of the hole and drew beautifully before landing 6 feet past and zipping back to 2.  Kick in for birdie!  If only I would have read the green a little better I could of aced it! haha.

I hit my drive into the trees on the right. I had to hit a very high cut nine. So i played the ball off the inside of my left foot, and held off the release. The ball started about 10 yards left of the flag and faded to about 2 feet right of the pin, landed softly.

I would have had another one to beat it, but the last limb in an open window though the trees caught my ball and i ended up 3 yards short of the green. it was the about a 5x5 opening in the trees that i had to hit through, and i thought i did..
