According to the link above, there are 114 local qualifying sites.  The local sites near me are mostly fields of 90, and a few are fields of 84.  If we go on the assumption that there are, say, 88 per, then that means there are 10,032 people who attempt local qualifying.  Sprinkle in the handful of players that are exempt into sectional qualifying and the lucky group who is exempt into the Open itself, then maybe there are something close to 10,200 or 10,300 people vying for about 150 spots.

So, something around 1.5% or so?

Wow.. Most of the entrants prolly have a better chance of squeezing through an 8 inch hole. But honestly if you finish somewhere in the middle then that would be seriously good too.

And you can bet the house, none of them is a 1.4 hcp... ;-)

If I ever get to a 1.4 (hah..), I would def give it a full throttle swing knowing well that I wouldn't have a prayer but then we are talking about a single weekend. Stranger things have happened. I would aim for a somewhere in the middle finish as I mentioned and enjoy myself senseless trying to do so. Would be a memory of a life time regardless.

I could see a tiny handful of the "1's" having a career day in local qualifying, but yeah, there are likely not many "worse" than +3 or +4 who are advancing to the promised land.

How many golfers playing off of 1.4 usually make the field for local qualifying? In the UK the entry requirements are 0.4 but even then the chances of making the field are minimal at 0.4...it usually gets cut off at 0.0 at highest. The British Amateur is usually even harder as the handicap cut off is normal at +0.5 or more! Very impressive standard of golf. Fully admire any of you attempting to qualify for the US Open and wish you all the best! I hope one day I can enter The Open qualifying here one day...will need to up my practicing though!

Anybody who's 1.4 or better can sign up so long as there are spots available at the courses and those are first come, first serve.  The amount of spots that go from local to sectional qualifying is based on field size.  For example, last year 6 guys moved on from my field of 115 golfers.  At the sectional site near me, the field was 60 golfers I think and only 2 moved on to the Open.

I don't have pipe dreams, I know if I were to make it through local to sectionals I would have to play lights out and have two of my better rounds ever. Springfield is my sectional first choice followed by Columbus then Rockville MD third. You are looking at 135 won Springfield last year and 139 was in a playoff for the last spot.

I can shoot those scores, though the likelyhood is small. My main reason is to be a participant and to prep for the Mid Am qualifier. It will be a ton of fun. My buddy is already excited about being on the loop.

One of the better amateur players at my club made it out of local qualifying a couple of years ago.  He's probably a +1.  I'm thinking he shot a couple under locally.  We were all excited to see how he'd do at sectionals.

He got creamed.  He came back and said, "You know what it's like when you have such a bad day playing with your buddies that you can sense the pity they feel for you?  It was like that."  Said he felt like he belonged on the High School golf team....if they'd have him.  I think he shot 150 or so for the 36 holes, and that was his impression.  :~(
