Where would you say it moves to on your backswing? Either forward left, forward right or back right. I always thought it was forward right( towards right knee)  As a result your head and sternum move to the right of the ball. The answer is forward left (towards left knee)

It moves in three dimensions:

  • Toward the golf ball.
  • Downward.
  • Backward away from the target.

If that's not what you're asking… I'm not sure what you're asking.

I too, have difficulty understanding what is being asked.

Down - obviously

Towards the ball - obviously

A thought I often use is "point your lead shoulder at the ball" on the backswing. The caveat being, don't get overly steep with your shoulder plane.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

I think golfers tend to have a shallow shoulder turn rather than a steep one. It might feel more like the shoulders are pointing more between the ball and the golfer.

True. But I got way to steep at one point and had to feel like I was turning level.

Rotating 90 degrees to the spine should be the goal when doing any activity even the backswing.  Not sure what that should feel for a person but you can video yourself and find out.

I think a "steep" shoulder turn can also be produced by bending over too much. I see a lot of that on the course. Guys standing way too far from the ball and bending over too much.

In my experience those guys are most likely to swing flatter, more around themselves.

But I'm still not sure what the point of this topic is…?
