McIlroy himself mentioned the fields are deeper nowadays and with every passing major it gets harder to win and I'd have to agree.

Who knows what drives Rory but he does seem to worry too much about what is said in the media and social media.

Agreed. IMO he's always had a little man's complex and tries to overcompensate via the aggressive weightlifting, swinging out of his shoes (probably causing some of his back problems), boasting about his bank account, and worrying about what guys like Elk have to say about him. Maybe he can use that complex to stay motivated....but yea, if he keeps putting the way he has been, this whole discussion is moot because he'll become irrelevant in time either way regardless of how 'driven' he may or may not be.

The guy goes 78-71 MC in a US Open coming off a layoff, and suddenly he's never winning another major? I mean, you might be right, but if he doesn't, it will be for reasons you did not argue.

Not sure what this means, but for the record; I think he'll never win another major because:

1.) his  putting sucks.

2.) injuries will continue to nag/sideline him

3.) Field strength keeps getting better

I never said Elk's comments (apathy) are why he'll never win another. Just that there could be a shred of truth in his comments.

Yea but did you read my post beyond that? He's going off. The stats all say that, except for his short game. His putting has been a lot better than last year too, currently at +0.341 from -0.207 in 2016. Small sample in 2017 because of injuries, but still promising.

I think Rory will be fine. Obviously you're entitled to your opinion, but I think it's more on the provocative side of things than anything subjectively interesting when it comes to sports debates like this. That's just opinion though, hope that's fine.

Your stats were good and I was honestly surprised how solid Rory has been of late. No doubt that it's just a provocative discussion to have...he's an entertaining talent and character to talk about.

As much as anything against him, I continue to be amazed how strong and deep the fields are now and how many world class guys one has to beat to win a major.

Hey, I totally agree with that about the absurdity of the field. I mean, Rory definitely got his butt handed to him at Erin Hills, that's for sure, even if that was mostly self-inflicted.

I think if Rory never wins another major, I think it will most likely be because of injuries more than anything else. He's dealt with back issues since he was 19 years old. It was around 2010 when he was diagnosed with some sort of degenerative condition in his lower spine, and it was so concerning to him that he decided to completely change his lifestyle by eating better and doing regular strength training to improve the core muscles around his spine. Kudos to him for being so dedicated to nutrition and exercise and ultimately transforming his body over the last seven, eight years. To me, that's dedication. There might be some vanity mixed in there as motivation, but I really do think that there's genuine drive and love of the game displayed in that kind of a consistent change.

Yea, this is definitely fun to chat about. There really are so many freaks on tour these days. Even the journeymen are freaks.

Reading the piece below on Koepka, if many of the players have this attitude on the PGA Tour, no wonder it's so competitive. The talent, self-belief, tenacity and sacrifice.

How is Elkington a racist? That is an awfully strong word to use on someone. You really think he believes black people are inferior?

Elkington has made several public bigoted remarks in the past (including some fairly recently).  I don't recall any specifically about blacks offhand, but I do remember some about other races.  He also hasn't limited his bigotry to racial remarks.

I don't like Elk's comment, and I don't like Rory's retort, he could have taken the high road but flexed his wallet instead, not my kind of comment, and I usually like what Rory has to say.

It's never been easy to win on the tour, splitting hairs IMO, just because guys look better today doesn't mean they're better golfers, it just means they spend more time in the gym.

Kuddo's for Rory. Enough is enough, sometimes you have to stand up. I like Rory for how he reacts.

Put a microphone on anyone, and their worst moments would come across horribly.

So true.  We all have bigotries but nobody cares what we think.

That is the standard response when someone says something that makes you made.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
